£8,500. For a Ford Capri? The world really has gone nuts. After all a nicely rebuilt piece of crap is still a piece of crap! There are so many great cars you could buy for that money...

*Awaits rage from all devout Capri fans...

      Yeah - I reckon £8.5k would produce a 3rd Gen Supercharged Lexurf ...

Have you SEEN what these things are worth in good nick? I can see it being worth £30k in 15 years - easily!

Mk1 Escorts can be £30k, and they are truly crap! (However, they're the epitome of 'rally car' so are every 40-something's dream)

The Capri may well be crap, but for sheer sentimentality, I'd LOVE one!

        Or a Mk3 Cortina GT, Mk1 RS2000 etc etc...

I just don't get it with the whole classic-but-crap car thing. I know some of them go for lots of money, but even so. My idea of a perfectly restored Escort is one which has been melted down into steel to make a proper car...

The only supercharging you could get with a 3rd Gen is if you asked £200 for a cut and blow dry...
But yes, you could get a perfect and supercharged Lexus 2nd Gen for that easily!
Or a Lotus Esprit, or a Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit, or an MGB, or a Mini Cooper, or a Jaguar S-type, or a Porsche 911, or an Audi Quattro.... or, or, or...

My brother bought himself an MGB a little while ago ...

It had a bare metal rebuild 3 years ago and then the guy stiffened the chassis before dropping in the running gear from an RV8 - so he's got a 3.9 V8 MGB that does 0-60 in sub 6 second and he pays no road tax !

Apparently it sounds awesome but I wouldn't know cos I ain't seen or driven it yet ...

The one dishing the dirt dares suggest a Lotus Esprit as a 'good' car?

Given you mentioned a quattro, I'll let you off - but you wont get a decent Ur for £8.5k.

Just love the way when you open up the bonnet all you get is and eye full of engine...... not a mass of wires and pipes and gismos and stuff to go wrong...

Not for me as i am that 40 something who aches for a mk1 escort with forest arches etc etc etc......
                    Remember arrows are silent.....................
Don't forget to tell everyone its indestructable as seen on top gear.......

spanked several times by a fat lady who DEFINITELY wears the trousers...some lawyer thing i believe.

I would give my back teeth, and half a spleen, for a mk1 3.0 capri

Ha - furry muff! That's how subjective it is I suppose. My Esprit was the "best" car I've ever had. Little 2 cylinder engine, made of 2mm thick fibreglass, crap parts bin switches, shook your teeth out at anything over about 130mph, and had a turbo lag like no other. But its chassis was Chapman genius - it was like driving a go-cart, and I drove it everywhere sideways. Plus it's shape was beautiful and still is today, and it had pace from 50-80 like nothing else I've ever driven.

So yes if I wanted a classic for less than £10k, that's what I'd get. But objectively I agree it may not warrant a mention.

The quattro I've always loved for some reason. Maybe it was because I fancied Michelle Mouton when I was a kid! Oo, and I'd think about one of those Lancia Intergrales too.

                            Ooo for a big garage.
                            Sorry, barn.
                            Sorry, aircraft hangar...
