  • Various Questions...

    Hi Guys.

All questions pertain to gen 2 Surfs - most likely all I'll be able to afford.

Am I to understand that there is no factory-built aftermarket winch bumper available for the Surf (ARB, TJM, etc), and that some of you guys have had custom one-off items made? Aren't there any Hilux winch bumpers that fit?

Am I to also understand that there are no factory-built aftermarket roof rails available for the Surf, and that the only route seems to be to self-fit some suitable rails from other cars?

I know the rear springs can be replaced with longer ones, giving a bit of a lift - is there anything similarly simple that can be done to raise the front, given that they're torsion bars?

Is there any way to tell if a 2.4's head has been replaced?

What's the biggest tyre that can be fitted to a gen 2 without need for modifying anything?

What are the lotto numbers going to be this Saturday (PM only).

At this time, I don't need a winch bumper (or a winch), or big tyres, (though I would use roof rails, and I could certainly find a use or two for a lotto win), but I'd aspire to getting them some time.

    Thanks,

    Mark

Nope, ARB, TJM all make winch bumpers for a Surf, the hard bit is finding them, or paying lots for shipping form US or Oz.

    Yup.

Wind the torsion bars up,uprated torsion bars, ball joint spacers all lift the front. 1 1/2" is sensible max, 2" if your pushing things.

Nope, not reliably, unless its all shiny

    31's

You can get TJM, ARB and WARN but they are very expensive and not easily availiable

Correct - you can get Thule roof bars butnot rails

      Yes - BJ spacers

Is there any way to tell if a 2.4's head has been replaced?

      Not really

What's the biggest tyre that can be fitted to a gen 2 without need for modifying anything?

      31/10.5/15 (I think)

6-14- not telling you the rest

Good luck! mine was going to be a standard road car when I bought it but now it has a body lift, suspension lift, snorkel, 33" wheels and I've bought a winch to go on it - just need the bumper! (considering getting some diff locks at some point too)

I bow to your superior typing skills! Your mechanical/Surf knowledge is nearly as good as mine

I think there is a spare bumper laying on the floor behind your garage

              Thanks guys.

A 265/75-16 has an OD of 31.65" (width is 10.5").

A 265/65-16 has an OD of 29.6" (width is 10.5").

So 265/65-16 safe, would you get away with 265/75-16?

Most 2nd gen Surfs have 15" wheels. It'd be cheaper to just get tyres to fit rather than getting new wheels too... :-)

One more - do free-wheeling front hubs really improve fuel consumption?

It probably does save you fuel, although it's such a minimal amount you'd probably have to drive 100k miles to break even on the cost of the hubs.

It saves fuel - that's what I told the missus when I bought mine

I'm running 265/70 16s on my (I think) unmodified Mk2 without any issues. Going back to 15" rims and tyres but only 'cause I've bought some pretty alloys on the Bay.
