  • 3.0l 2nd Gen 4WD puzzler??

Okay so I think I've read every post there is on 4WD, none answer my particular snag......
selected it on the button the other day and nothing happened hmmmmm! I thought thats odd. So i thought I'd give it a proper check out, I did all the usual stuff such as trying selecting 4WD lo-ratio on the stick, tried driving forward and reversing etc.... nothing, no engaging clunk, no light on dash. It all worked just fine and dandy 3 months ago in the snow, and I have done nothing that I am aware of to cause any problems,(I haven't been pulling any plugs out etc or doing any off-roading)

So...I've checked if the front prop had engaged in both 4wd lo and hi, no it was rotating freely, I've checked vacuum and voltage at vsvs the brown vsv(front one) has a vacuum and nothing happens (voltage)when selecting de-selecting 4wd. brown vsv has no vacuum

I then had a good check of transfer case plugs and wiring, I found to my horror some dodgy looking bodge repair on a pair of sensors that come out of the top of the gearbox at the back end before the transfer case (they are both high up and each have two black wires leading to separate plugs on near side of gearbox loom) dunno what they are, any ideas?... I removed they bodge tape repair, and repaired wires with heat shrink and solder, unfortunately this didn't fix the problem.

Next step check for voltage to transfer case engagement motor, missus A in the truck engine running selecting/ de-selecting 4wd .... 12 volts throughout, should this not vary on/off with the 4WD switch?????,

I had a good trawl through t'internet hoping to find reference to a fuse/ relay that would supply power to motor, there was reference to both engine/guage fuses, mine are both fine, and also ref to a relay on brake pedal mount...not on my 3.0 surf there ain't. so I wen't and had a look at my buggered old 2.4 and it does have one. does the 3.0 have one elsewhere?

I pinched the 4wd ecu from the old 2.4, which is the same as 3.0, I know this ecu works, and swapped into 3.0, no joy!

next I checked the resistance in the switch on the lever, varied from 40 - 500 ohms when moving the cable.....HA gotcha you little F$*$er!!....not to be, even after changing with the good one from other surf it still didnt solve the snag.

so in a nutshell, I think I have tested and checked pretty much everything, and the only conclusion I have come to is that there is no power getting to transfer engage motor, so it must be a dodgy plug or the motor seized/contacts dirty within????

Oh and almost forgot trimmed the rubber hose that comes from transfer motor as it had a big tear in it, would this have caused problems?

    Any thoughts??

    Any thoughts??
MATE!....... How did you get that avatar past the censors?.........Cheers....Mick.

I have a feeling that Seaman may have been involved in one of the other photos taken during that photo session...

One is neutral position switch (activates the red A/TP icon on dash)
The other is an A.D.D. oil pressure switch.

No, it has constant 12v when ignition is on.

There should be one, but I don't know where on the 3.0.

Check the white and grey multi-plugs behind the ECU, the A.D.D. connections are in those. they might have gotten damp after the snow?

Oh and almost forgot trimmed the rubber hose that comes from transfer motor as it had a big tear in it, would this have caused problems?
Thats just a breather pipe, but if split it could let water into the T/case.
                        Any thoughts??

Something for you to go on.

                          thanks for the info

I'm going to pull the transfer box motor apart as the breather pipe was hanging off, hopefully this fixes the snag.

Any idea if a 2nd gen 2.4 trans stuff is inter changeable with 3.0?
