          It's the bit between the hip and the knee, latin name 'topus halfof legus'. So, yes, I suppose it helps keep the old chap in position....

          Edit: If you're referring the 'banjo string', that's a frenulum. Break that and you're in a world of blood.

              My wife shattered her pelvis wakeboarding, and I broke my neck. Hey ho.

              This time the Xrays show that I am inwincible however. So a very tedious day in A&E for nothing...
