  • Calling all motorcyle experts!

Ok, so I have an offroad buggy which is running a Suzuki GS500 motor. Trouble is, the damn thing wont start/run anymore. I'm pretty sure its something to do with the electrics, as the engine turns fine, but there seems to be no spark from either spark plug.

I don't know where to start - I checked the only fuses I can see, and they appear ok, but there are a couple of other items I don't know what they are...

I've added a parts diagram, maybe someone with some technical knowledge can help me out, mainly with what all the other parts are, and what they do?

    Cheers!

If there's no spark from either plug AND your battery is charged, I'd be looking at the distributor as the number 1 culprit.

Ok thanks, so what number is that in the picture then?

It hasn't got a distributor-it's got a CDI ignition with trigger and a coil for each plug. The CDI black box isn't shown.

No. 6 is the rectifier/regulator unit. No's 1 and 1c are both different types of starter solenoid. The other 2 are coils.

If you've got a starter solenoid the same as 1c with a fuse under the end plug, that may well be your problem. You need to check the fuse is actually making contact as well as it isn't blown-they often corrode the holder.

If that's not your problem and running a multimeter over the wiring doesn't show a bad contact somewhere, you'll probably need a new CDI box. The triggers rarely go wrong.

          No Spark.

          Check plugs.

          Check plug wires.

Check resistance of primary and secondary windings in the coils. (Ohmeter needed) part #8

Check you have power arriving on the low tension wires going into coil, you'll need an automotive multimeter to check the peak - a domestic one won't show it.

Check resistance of the CDI pickups mounted by the alternator.

If all that checks out it'll be your CDI black box.

          I had failed triggers recently....

Are you getting fuel into the cylinders - in other words are the plugs getting wet?

            Cheers, Nick

With no spark, it won't start anyway.

Had this problem before and it was part 6 'regulator rectifier' replaced it worked fine.
