  • Intercooler

    Hi All,

    I'd like to Intercool my 2.4 (it might not make much of a difference!)

    Who has Intercooled an LN130 and what Intercooler did you use?
    “Do or do not... there is no try.”

    Dunno if you've seen it at all but the Aussie site has some great bits on intercoolers...

    http://toyotasurf.asn.au/techsite/performance.htm

    To sum up what I've read about things:

    1. Top mounted is easiest to do.
    2. Top mounted doesn't work so well when you're stationary (engine heat absorbed by intercooler)
    3. Front mounted works best.
    4. Front mounted needs lots of pipes/tubes so would be more expensive to do.
    5. Charge coolers are ace if you've got money to burn.

      Yup.

      You don't need extra power when you're stationary. You need extra horsepower to pull away swiftly, intercoolers only provide mid-range torque gains.
      3. Front mounted works best.
      Not necessarily, you'll get increased lag.

      4. Front mounted needs lots of pipes/tubes so would be more expensive to do.

      It's a 2.4 Surf!

        Front mount is more efficient, but as you say at the expense of lag. However, on a 2.4 will lag be noticeable as the accelerator pedal is connected via an elastic band to an engine powered by chicken soup.

        Still waiting for someone to fit a chargecooler from a GT-Four or MR2 Turbo.

        Could just buy a 2.7i

          I hear a 1UZ-FE engine substantially improves the performance of a 2.4 Surf?!

            Not as much as bolting an intercooler to one.

                    Intercooler = £50 ish
                    V8 = £3000 ish

                    I'll save for the V8 while driving an intercooled 2.4

                        When air temps were minus 20 last winter, my surf would only just start...

                        ...as for performance gains from nice cold (dense) air, well, can't really remember the boost in performance tbh...

                        Have we got MAF's and can the ECU change the mixture significantly to produce a gain?

                        (a little knowledge is dangerous by the way...!)

                          Just find a scrapper and get the chargecooler, the water rad and the pump for £50.

                            By the time -20C air has been through a spooled up turbo, its (technically speaking) as fecking scalding as it is on a summers day.
