  • Stuck in 4 wheel drive - HELP

    Hi,

After rolling my fields last week, my 1995 Surf is now stuck in 4WD. I can move the 4WD gear stick, but it is showing on the dashboard as being in 4WD which ever position I have it in. I wondered if it was just a fault with the lights on the dashboard, so tried driving it and it is definitely not in 2WD! Can only go slowly and a very unhealthy burning smell.

Tried the usual reversing, emergency stops, rolling the car back and forth, but nothing seems to work. The garage have also had a look and cant seem to work it out. Ive had the car for over 4 years and never had anything like this before, so wondered if anyone can help! I don’t want to believe the car is dead, as everything else seems fine.

    Thanks.

I'd have a look at your add vac lines mate there on the driverside of the engine bay your 4wd works on vacuum hence check the vac lines if there ok check the vac tank which is under your driver side wheel arch you might have punctured that if that is ok the chances are the solenoid on the diff is either stuck or the wiring to the solenoid has come off. If after you have checked all that and it's all ok then I'd start check transfer box on your gearbox starting with the props and then transfer case did you notice any sounds or vibrations when you put it In 4wd?

Just a thought but you haven't pushed in the 4WD button as well as moving it into 4WD with the small lever have you? That would still keep it in 4WD what ever position you have the 4WD lever in.

Thanks everyone for your advise! Much appreciated.

There havent been any rattling noises at all. The button is out of the 4WD drive position, but when you drive it it is definitely not in 2WD and the dashboard light shows its still stuck in 4WD.

TonyN - I have contacted my local garage who are going to take off the front prop shaft, then I will be in touch to bring it down to you. Thanks so much for this! Being a girly girl this all sound very complicated, so really glad of everyones help. I hoping its not too major a job, I love my Hilux so really pleased it can be fixed!

                *bump*

what happened here Sara? Now mine is ding the same thing!

when i unclicked 4WD it started disengaging in high-gear after the usual 20 meters or so, then it was 100 meters, then 1km then 2km now it is stuck in 4wd permanently!
this causes major issues when i am trying to park, it nearly dies on me.
plus mines an auto so trying to keep the revs up is a disaster incase they grip and i smash into something or someone.
