So where does it come from then? I thought it came from the water / steam as well after being after being liberated by some kind of catalytic or chemical reaction. I know that the electrolysis of sea water produces hydrogen and though that maybe something was happening here which had that same effect.
Quote The fuel rods have a layer of cladding material made of a zirconium alloy. If zirconium is hot enough and is in the presence of oxygen (The steam provides the oxygen) then it can undergo a reaction that produces hydrogen gas.

Fair enough but as water is a combination of hydrogen and oxygen does the steam/water not provide the hydrogen as well ? From earlier posts it seems not, so where does it actually come from ??

As far as my understanding goes and i`ve got to say its not too far from that particular article. Zirconium produces hydrogen when it gets too hot.
No doubt someone will be along to clarify or tell me i`m wrong
Im kinda more worried about peoples views rather than the events in the nuclear plant to be honest. The plant has safety measures....people with crazy thoughts do not!
Some people on the boards actually think the plant will explode like a nuclear bomb!!
Are people really not educated enough to know, or maybe too lazy to find out?
These are the same people who thought the world was going to end when the Large Hadron Collider was turned on.
Im sure if the media mentioned the 'China Syndrome' hypothesis then that would lead them to believe that there will be a whole in the Earth from Japan to America!
The vast majority of Journalists are unqualified in anything but storytelling..The professional qualification is a well.... lacking..
Anything of a technical nature is completely alien, as a result the broadcast and printed media content is from someone who basically trying to explain what they themselves don't understand, also regardless of media outlet, the more juicy the story sounds the higher up the running order/front page and longer the duration given...
never let the facts get in the way of a good story....

From the reaction of the heated Zirconium with Oxygen.
Im not buying it. Zirconium is an element. Oxygen is an element. They cant react together to produce hydrogen. I still think that the hydrogen must come from the water. Maybe The Zirconium and the oxygen from the steam combine to form an oxide and you are then left with some spare hydrogen mooching around. Im off to Google it, doesnt look like I,ll get an answer here
I always thought Hydrogen was produced from water too, wasn't that the basis of the "run your engine on water cr@p" that was advertised? only they didn't say you need a mulit thousand quid machine to extract it,
I'm no Physisist (not sure if I can even spell it)
But I think Hydrogen is the commonest element in the universe - The problem is it's always attached to another element and is an utter basturd to seperate.
Hydrogen can be produced from water as water is H2O = Hydrogen + two particles of Oxygen it's seperating the oxygen that's the issue.
