  • anyone had this prob?

hi i have a imported hilux pickup on a 97 plate with an auto 2.4td, ever since i first got the vehicle when i press the brakes repeatedly i.e in wet or icy conditions(no abs) on the 3rd or 4th stamp the peddle goes to the floor and the brakes do not work, if i let off and drive for a bit they are fine again, if i press the brakes once i.e in dry conditions stopping normally or sharply they are amazing, but press them 3 or 4 times and it goes, is this a standard thing on all surfs?
    ALL THE GEAR!............no idea!

It sounds like its to do with the brake servo coming from the alternator - It's just the way they are I think - experts will be along soon!

    I don't think a 2.4 should be on a '97 plate?

now now children.Who hasn't read the post correctly. He does state its a Hilux Pick-up but he does ask if the problem is standard on all surfs.

What we need to know in order to answer the question correctly is Have you got a surf or a pick-up

                This is just a guess Rich, but I think he's got a mk3 pick-up.

As I say it's just a guess, I remember reading it somewhere........oh yeah, under his username.

When was the brake fluid last changed? Brake fade is what you're describing.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

good point bout the brake fluid, not sure when it was done, the amount i have pumped through over the years is prob more than sufficent but i will check that, although it has been happening since near new as its been in the family since new. its a mk3 double cab, LN 108 if that clears things up, was just curious if anyone else had similar things happen, does not seem to effect the brakes in normal use only when applied in quick pumps, strange!

So you've waited nearly 13 years, living with this problem - and now you ask?!

If the peddle gets lower at each pump until it eventually reaches the floor, but recovers to normal if you take your foot off, my money would be on you having a faulty master cylinder.
If you maintain very gentle pressure on the brake peddle does it slowly sink to the floor?

it didn't really seem a major prob, i tried loads of things, bleeding, checking things, replacing things, im happy they work well in an emergency but u have to take care in snow or rain which is standard anyway. if u apply a small amount of continuous pressure they are fine, even if u start soft then press hard they still ok its only if u repeatedly press the pedal it loses nearly all stopping power...

Still sounds like Servo/vacuum Problem to me but i'm not an expert - when my alternator belt was slipping I had a similar problem

You're describing two different faults here

Pedal goes to floor.....probably master cylinder seals failed, unless fluid level is dropping and you have a leak in the system

Pedal goes hard and vehicle wont stop= servo assistance problem... vacuum used quicker than the vac pump can supply = normal if you are pumpimg the padal rapidly
What have I told you about thinking Erroll
