Tailgate rams

What's the best plan for recharging or replacing the tailgate rams ? My Surf has the underslung spare, and I'd like the tailgate to open fully without having to always push it up to it's fully open position, as I'm forever banging my head off it...
I'm Googling "tailgate struts".....

A 2" lift fixes this.

What sort of size.. Open and closed centres ? I may have one in my workshop somewhere possibly. I will have a look tomorrow.
