Which freewheeling hubs?

I finally have a Surf and I love it.

3.0 manual Gen 2.

Now, I'm going to fit freewheeling hubs to it as I find it invaluable to be able to use low range with 2 wheel drive for launching/recovering/reversing my boat.

sell them. Which is the best to use?

Both work fine, but Roughtrax ones are the ones Toyota use on pickups and pretty bullet proof.

If moneys not the issue use the Aisin ones (Roughtrax)

Also AVM ones have an aluminium alloy body. They come nice and polished, but have no laquer finish. They work fine, but turn white and powdery in very short order. I'd get R/T ones.

if you just want low 2 wheel drive why not just disconnect the connection from the gearbox? that'll give you high/low 2/4 wheel drive

Think the connector is blue, and is on passenger side (on autobox, but assume manual box has similar system to detect that low ratio is selected)

That sounds like a good idea.
It almost changed my mind about fitting them, but I'd rather not have the halfshafts turning constantly.I do enough miles that even a slight increase in mpg means they'll pay for themselves.

Besides, freewheeling hubs mean if someone else is using it they can't do any damage by hitting the 4x4 button on tarmac.

Hi the "WARN" hubs are used but in very good condition the person i bought them of told me he had put them on a 3 months before the head went on his Surf and stood on his drive for 15months before he decided to break the truck down for spares.

Damn,I read your reply 5 minutes too late-I just put an order in with Roughtrax.

Incidentally, I found the cause of the fuse blowing-the foglight bulb had blown and shorted internally.

The next question is... am I right in thinking the 4x4 button engages not only the ADD system but the front prop via the centre 'diff' at the same time?

If I'm right, is there any reason why I can't permanently lock the ADD system in, remove all the ADD solenoids etc and use the freewheeling hubs to engage/disengage drive to the front wheels?

I rather like the idea of not having a whole fairly complex, little used system to go wrong when I need it.

Hi Matt i can see the way you are thinking i think you would be better asking "BUSHWACKER" i think it was him that devised a method of locking the front diff in.

PS if you look in the Modifications section you will see what i am talking about
