    £216 fully comp

I wrote my 3rd Gen off by driving it over the end of a bridge because of a hastily loaded trailer!
However as I had protected my no claims my premium didn't go up even after direct line coughed up £5k without quibble.
    I now have a heavily modified 2nd gen, I'm 37 and still pay a mere £216

Maybe its 'cos I live in scotty land on a farm

or maybe it 'cos my car alarm is 2 x German shepherds perched in the back, anyone that wanted to pinch the truck would quickly develop a bladder problem!!

              mornin' all

I tried, really I did but for the life of me couldn't come up with 5

              1. ATF cooler in main rad - not good enough if used for towing
              2. lack of bullbar options (at reasonable price) in the UK for the 3rd gen
              3. everyone thinks i'm some sort of nut as, even after 6 years, I still drive it with a big grin on my face

I keep looking around as I feel i'm due a change (really wanted a Range Rover) but everything I've looked at isn't as good as the Surf.

Now had my head looked at so no more silly thoughts about something with a Green oval but I do like the 80 series VX 4.2 diesel landcruisers (3 diff locks & 8 seats)

              I'm not overweight, I'm undertall!

I like the cupholder where it is, A/C keeps cold drinks cold, or stop choc melting on hot days.

Love the rear window/tailgate, its perfectly universal for anything you want ot carry/do/camp.. etc.

I'm finding hard to think of actual fault, the ATF cooler is a flaw if you want abuse the trucks towing ability, but not an issue with normal use, same for limited front suspension movement, a flaw for how I use the truck, but not for its intended market.

Electrics are fine, old age is killing the looms to rear doors where they flex, so I guess I would say better quality wire could be something to moan about.

If you talking things that go wrong, regardless of cause, ie, no maintenance/abuse..the things I fix the most are.

                  1/ Overheating
                  2/ Rear Window
                  3/ Worn steering components
                  4/ CV gaiters
                  5/ 4wd not working

                    things wrong with our trucks?

Not a lot to grumble about really,

                    pros
                    1. they are cheap to buy
                    2. cheap to insure
                    3. cheap and pretty easy to fix, not too much electronic sh!te under the lid
                    4. they make chelsea tractor drivers pee their panties when you pull up next to them
                    5. No need to wash them as they are much better covered in mud
                    6. overall as long as you give it a reasonable service on a regular basis it is pretty indestructable
                    7. by far the biggest boot space available in any 4x4, (for the dags)

                    cons
                    1. A bit thirsty, but i don't drive it daily back and forth to work so that's not a big deal
                    2. The 2.4 engine sucks

                    ........Surf No1..........Surf No2.........Nearly bought.......But instead I.......My only toy
                    .......Great truck,......2.4 Sh!te......this, quickly had.....bought Surf No3....better off road
                    ........written off.......bling,bling....a word with myself...from mudsurfer.......than a surf

Don't think that clean 2nd gen is too bad!! I actually like it. And if you move Einstein out of the way I think you might spot punxsutawney phil.

I've been trying to think what people mean by poor tailgate but haven't said anything. As TonyN said it's quite good design. One reason I like it is because wherever you are, road trip, camping etc you can flip the tailgate down and sit on it and have lunch etc.

Some apply only to the 2.7...

                        Good

I like the 3rd gen tailgate. Plenty of area underneath for when it invariably rains, and you sit on the boot floor, just like you sit on the 2nd gen tailgate.

Tranny tunnel doesn't even get slightly warm, so no melted choc (or lypsyl)

Much lower compression - cooler running engine.

Quite pokey for a heavy truck - can overtake stuff!

Pretty economical on long trips but...

                        Bad

...bit thirsty on very short journeys.

Oil filter in REALLY stupid place!

Rear window mech will be prone to same failure modes as 2nd gen - which Toyota really should have sorted out! At least you can still open the tailgate with the window closed...

Quite surprised no-one mentioned the (comparatively) p1ss poor lights or pretty feeble brakes on the 2nd gen. Yes, as you can see, I'm sold on the 3rd gen!

The brakes are fine, if the fluid that's been in there from new is changed.

p.s. have you found the fuel filter yet?

I've 'seen' the fuel filter... haven't even thought about changing it. I'm hoping it works ok til 200'000 miles when I buy a new truck

The brakes on my 3rd gen are epic compared to my 2nd gen, even after a fluid / pads / shoes / discs change.

Perhaps it was something to do with 33/12s?

                              brakes with 33s

I have 33s on my 2nd Gen, and my brakes could stop the titanic
