Do i just tap into the existing sender unit?

A new compatible sender will be supplied with the gauge, just unscrew the old sender and screw in the new one. Only a dribble of coolant will be lost if the engine is stone cold!
Then run a wire from the sender to the new gauge.
Then an illumination wire obtained from the multi-plug on the steering column or from the ashtray light for example, and an earth wire.
Full fitting instructions are supplied with the gauges anyway, even pictures!!

Cheers vince, pics are good when you don't know a thing about wiring.
If its not broke don't fix it.
