Attempting to fit freewheeling hubs

Having got myself a spare morning today I decided to try and fit freewheeling hubs.

They were obtained from Roughtrax - link - and seem like a quality piece of kit (as usual from Roughtrax).

I have read Vince's excellent write up on fitting them and it all looks pretty straightforward barring one problem that I have encountered...

I cannot for the life of me manage to get the old hubs off. Tried using a cold chisel and it just doesn't seem to want to shift them.

Any other handy tips on getting the old hubs apart? Everything else looks pretty easy otherwise.

i just gave mine a good sharp tap on the driven plate edge to loosen the tapered collars be careful of the studs though as they can be easily bent or snapped

Ahhh...the cone washers...work of old nick them buggas...a good load of clouting, with a hammer thats softer than the steel your hitting...and dont forget to swear a lot!

And don't forget to wind the nuts on just a little to stop said cone washers from pinging out and taking yer eye out or impaling yer cat
or losing them selves in the undergrowth.........

Mine took a fair whacking, don't be tempted to drive a cold chisel in there you just make the little buggers fit snugger than a nuns knickers...
they are designed to resist the flange coming away if the nuts fall off....
if they have stuck to the stud the more you force the flange away the tighter they grip...
You need to get them to let go and move away on thier own.....

If it's the hubs same as mine there is 2 holes that are threaded, find a bolt that fits and tighten, this pulls the hub away, if your very lucky like me one may even break off and you have to spend even more time drilling it out

Mine has the two threaded holes, M10 I seem to recall. Get a 25mm bolt and screw them in a little at a time with a hand spanner,if they start feeling tight,stop and tighten the opposite one, turn about 5 turns each,remove the bolts,tap the plate back gently and the conical washers should be loose.


Well, works for me anyway.......

PS.....anyone know the size of the lock nuts for the bearings?
