Getting a problems shifting from 1st to second (Auto) hesitates a bit before engaging? Have read some posts on this problem but I am no wiser!!
Plenty of oil so not that, I saw a thread about adjusting the bands outside the box, does anybody have a picture on how to adjust these??

You can't adjust the clutch bands from the outside of the transmission.
You say there's plenty of oil, but is it in good condition i.e. red and not dark brown?
Does the problem sort itself out when the the engine/trans are up to temp?

Yes ! once its up to temp no problems, just first thing

Haven't done it on a Surf, but on Rangeys/Discos, there's a filter inside the sump of the transmission that gets clogged up. Changing that filter and the oil makes a big difference to how smooth the gears change, especially noticeable on lower gears, and would make sense if it's more of a problem when cold (oil thicker).
