New surf required

Hi all ,

I am currently after getting another 3rd gen surf as mine was written off by the insurance company today. I have been looking on auto trader and ebay and see they are still holding a good price, Looking at the ones on these sites at the moment i think i am looking at upto £4000 to get an equivalant surf to the one i had. I have come across a place in Bolton called "ak motors - surf specialist", does anybody know of them and if they are a reputable dealer as i would have to travel from Cambridge by train. He has a fair few in stock and they do look very clean and tidy and thought if i went up there to look and had the cash in my pocket it would not be a wasted journey.

I bought mine from AK Motors. He seemed a reasonable guy, although I did wonder why mine was so cheap:it has council transmission, which I didn't know about at the time.
He's open to haggling, and will let you test drive all his motors. However, he deals in second hand motors, so it's a case of caveat emptor. Take a good torch and a set of coveralls so you can roll around underneath !

3rd Gen transmission allows the use of 4WD on normal roads. Council 3rd Gen or 2nd Gen transmission doesn't.

I have used my Surf for long periods of time over the last 5 weeks on snowy/icy roads without any detriment. The Mrs drove it 20 miles in 4WD on frosty roads before I got home...
Just how long does it take to totally knacker the transmission ?

If yours is a' 98 model you can leave it in 4wd as long as you like.

It won't have 'council transmission'!

[EDIT] Bugga I shoud have read your first post more thoroughly! Evidently it does have council transmission. In that case it doesn't take long to knack up if you drive in 4wd mode on tarmac.

I thought all 3rd gens had a 4 wheel drive system that could be driven on dry / normal roads ?

On the documents, it is a '98 R. I have looked into various pics (which don't actually mean much at all), and have only seen this style of steering wheel and dash on a Landcruiser and a "53 plate Hilux (UK). It has had a lot of constant 4WD use recently, and everything is sweet as... I never get transmission heat and the fluid is clear red like new, no grumbles etc...no probs when putting it into 4WD to get me out of the now plentiful mud.....

No. Mine doesn't either. No big deal.

If you think you might forget your in 4WD on tarmac, then multimode could save you a big bill, but if you're not an airhead, then you're not really gaining much - and bargains are to be had from AK.
