Sean, it's not in warranty anymore dont suppose they'd do it for free now would they?
Samsung will pay for the re-programming of it as they have issued a notice regarding it. If its over two years old then it wont be covered by warranty. But they will still re program it foc.

What sort of noise is it ? could you put a clip on here? it might help. Try and listen to the motor to see if thats where the noise is comming from. It migt just be the fan blade catching if its been damaged / bent, by ice build up.

Have you had a look at it when it was defrosted to see if anything obvious was amis?

The fan assembly is inside the fridge on my model, so saves having to move the bugger!

Hopefully it is something simple and not £50 or more

It's a sort of loud fast drumming noise, a fan blade catching on something would definatly be about right, it "winds" down when you open the door, i'm sure it was this part that was replaced some years ago when we had the same trouble/noise and i do know he got at it from inside the fridge, the freezer side seems to be working fine and hit -20deg pretty quick, but the fridge side is stuggleing, took all day to drop to 3 deg and then rose to 12, ideal is from 1deg to 7, butter's soft and the milk went off,
i thinking of haveing a go at removeing the panel to see if i can figure/make sure which part has gone, also gonna phone samsung and mention the re-programming issue,
when the guy did it last time he said (when he'd finished) that shouldn't give you anymore trouble

dont know how to add sound (or vid) on here, sorry

That sounds like the same problem i had with mine. It should only take a couple of minutes to remove the back panel at the bottom. Just make sure it has fully defrosted as thats how the first engineer snapped the plastic on mine as it was still frozen together.

The second time I was asked to turn it off for 48 hours not just 24 so it was throughly defrosted for when he changed the casing.

The winding down noise is the fan slowing and rubbing against the ice at a declining speed until the fan stops while the door is open.

It takes longer to take the shelves out and empty the fridge than to remove and replace the panel.

There is a foam "spongy" seal around the cover which is the bit that can still be frozen.

Unless its re programmed it will keep building up ice.

Its a pain in the arse and a shame because other than that there lovely fridges.

          Good luck

Yeah i do like them, well it's been defrosting all day and still firmly stuck so i'll give it another full day, got 3 of the 4 screws out but the last one (top L.H) is ice'd in behind the carbon filter thing, anyway we have borrowed a small fridge from my daughter and we also have a chest freezer so ok for now, thanks for all your advice and when i do get the panel off i'll give ya a quick update

Well it worked on ours, thats all I can say. Exactly the same whirring and stopping when you open the door, build up of ice in the ice maker... sounds exactly like the auto defrost not working properly.

Its been quiet ever since, so in my opinion, I fixed my fridge by defrosting for less than 12 hours....

On the hand, we've never had problems with the fridge temps going up, Its always been -23 and +3*.....

Be good to know whats wrong with yours popeye, as no doubt mine will break again at some point!

AS promised the update, i finally got the backcover off from inside the fridge compartment after 2 days of thawing out, and of course couldn't see owt wrong with the fan blades, they turned effortlessly, with the cover electrics still connected i turned it round to face front and switched the fridge back on and the fan spooled up with no noise at all, so i can only assume the prob was due to ice build up, anyway put it all back together and it seems to be working fine, nice and quiet and temps are ok,
Samsung headquaters!!! give em a ring and after 5 minuits of verbal $hit i finally got to speak to a human, allbeit a far eastern woman human, basicly she reccons they aint interested and my model has already had the sensor upgrade (small blue dot sticker on the details label inside the fridge,) the fact that this "upgrade" is supposed to stop this ice build-up problem and it clearly isn't dosen't cut any ice (no pun intended) with them, so it's out of warranty and they dont wanna know,
so you guys that have had the recall jobby done bear in mind that it dont seem to make diddley squat difference to ice build up and by all accounts after 6 years or so insurance companys wont be too eager to give you extended warranty, (her words)
when the noise starts just switch the fecker off for 2 days and restart it, job done!!

Thanks for the advice Garry and the video, nice girl doing the demmo, got me sold, i'd buy it just so she can explane it to me
mine may be an slightly older model, number isRS21DCNS basicly the same as the video,
ours has (according to samsung) had the recall thing done but it obviously aint doing what it should, pity as i do like the things, as you say it's no real bother manually defrosting the bugga every few months,
samsung did give me the no of a local engineer, had a word with the woman there (more helpfull than the one at samsung) and it would have cost around £200 to replace the unit and sensor and their charge, she quoted £85 for the fan part, (£54 on espares) just shows ya, sod it! i'm happy to turn it off every few months

Mind you, my fridge engineering is like my gynacology...I ain't got a clue, but I'll have a bl00dy good look.

Don't know if this will be any help but I had a very similar problem with my Zanussi thing.

Every time I switched it off for a couple of days it got better but the problem always came back eventually.

My issue was caused by the drain that takes the melt water from the defrost cycle away. Every time the thing went into defrost, the water had no where to go and just froze again. It just backed up and backed up until the fan began to catch.

Two days defrosting, fish fingers in the bin and a bit of plastic pipe up the drain with me huffing and puffing until the blockage moved and lots of that lovely slime that fridges make glugging out cured it.

These drains normally drain into a plastic pot on top of the compressor; so it's nice and warm and the water evaporates.

I did have a look at the drain, there was no build up of water there and it seems ok, the prob with these samsungs seems to be ice building up at the top of the panel (near the fan, shown in the video)
and thanks for the offer Gra! but as the missis will tell you i'm more of a "hands on" person, i'll keep at it till i know it inside out
