  • There's 2 of me...

I got a phone call from my Bank yesterday. They said, "Hello Mr Cafferty, can we confirm the last 5 transactions on your Royalties account?" I obviously agreed.

Thursday - £200 Cash from an ATM at Asda in Grangemouth? yes
    Friday - Amazon UK - £25? Yes.
    Friday - iTunes - £10.43? Yes.
Asda in Grangemouth at 6:30 this morning £6.50? Yes.
£191.10 at 13:30 today, from an ATM in Brazil? - Em, what do you think?

"I'll cancel that transaction and block your card; you appear to have been cloned!"

Apparently; one of the machines in Asda has had a reader and camera fitted to it 'a few times now'!

When I think about it, I do recall noticing that my card didn't come out of the slot as far as it normally does, (I don't recall exactly what machine it was though) but I didn't think for a minute there'd be a reader in full view of security cameras in a 24 hour Superstore car park...

Top marks to the RBS for spotting and stopping it, no marks to Asda and Central Scotland Police for doing nothing about the cloning.

Small tip. Just have a feel around or a quick glance above the keypad. Cameras are usually easy to spot.

You'd think they could build something in to the machine that would spot there was something on it? I notice the RBoS have started using new machines, perhaps they have something in them.

I know the feeling. Unfortunately, in a capitalist society, fraud or dishonesty, even if it was committed by a third party, is treated as a greater crime than murder in some cases.

I must admit, RBS are on the ball with spotting anomalies like that, I had my card " queried" in Paris , simply because the wife ( joint a/c) had used hers in Edinburgh about an hour previously. On another occasion I used my RBS visa to pay a bill for a friend ( he gave me the cash) Two days later they called me to query that. Two years ago the wife used the card in Cyprus, where it was cloned, within hours attempts were made to use it in Greece and in Holland, they picked up on it immediately and stopped the card.
OP mentioned that his card was used in Brazil. I know 4 people who fairly recently have had cards cloned after they withdrew cash from ATMs situated inside Rio International airport, where the area with the ATMs is patrolled and monitored 24/7 by security guards, making everyone think its safe. Their accounts were then looted in Argentina.
Not too long ago their was a bit of a scandal in Edinburgh where a couple of petrol stations had been harvesting and cloning customers cards. You can be careful as anything, scoping out ATMs for cameras, and then your fuel retailer gets you. You cant be too careful

An interesting factoid the bloke told me. Cloned cards can't be used in the UK.

Must be a local one Andy, Maggie got the same call from the bank and the buggers spent £300 in Brazil, she got the call from the Clydesdale on Saturday morning.

The more I think about it, the more I think the card not coming out of the machine thing was at Sainsbury's in Denny.

Only time Maggie has handed her card over recently was actually in the bank itself when depositing a cheque.
She hasn't used an ATM for ages and it would have been the one at Sainsburys in Denny when she last did. Before that it would have been an RBS ATM in november.
She did some online shopping at Waterstones and on Firebox but both are HTTPS sites for payment.
