What side did you check?

If the bar is moving up and down, it's either the swivel joint on the pitman arm or the steering idler. The bar will rotate slightly on its axis, but it shouldn't move off its axis.

Try waggling the bar, with the wheels on the road, see if you can see where it's loose. Either that or video the movement (do it on both sides too) so we can be sure what you're saying.

Is the steering idler new? That's the only thing that would allow the rod to move off its axis on the passenger side.
