I didnt need to pull the shafts all the way out only enough to clear the splines. Thanks for the link. Think I'll need to pull the shafts completely clear to fit new back plates then. Great. Least I can do that leaky seal as well.

When you get the shafts out you can give the bearings a spin and enjoy the horrible rumble , you will need to get new ones pressed in. I thought mine were fine, only a very small leak on one side, I got new shafts built up with new bearings to simply swap them out, the difference in the amount of play in the bearings was incredible.
