Gonna have to look into this!! I thought a top mounted intercooler sat above the engine! Like a scooby... Hence the scoop. Why would toyota put an intercooler where heat is collected! That's not the efficient jap engineering we know and love :-s the idea of a scoop to at least cool the turbo is good

The intercooler/scoop are only effective at speeds above 30mph anyway, the engine heat is pushed out through the wheel arches by then. You don't need the extra torque sat in a traffic jam.

That's basically what a 1st gen is, a pick-up with an extra row of seats.

That being cleared up, a scoop to help keep the turbo cool would be efficient and look good! But to clear things up... Does the truck in the pics have a top mounted intercooler????

No, no intercooler on that one either.

You have to calculate the most efficient position by working out if the intercooler setup will be more efficient in these 2 scenarios:

1: A small top-mount intercooler which will suffer more from heatsoak but will not be effected by pressure drop as the hose length is kept to a bare minimum.

2: A large front-mount intercooler which will suffer more from pressure drop due to the long hose length required from turbo to intercooler then intercooler to inlet manifold. This setup doesn't suffer so much from heatsoak.

I think that a top-mount is going to be the most efficient on the Surf. Its far cheaper and reduces the distance that the air has to travel from the turbo outlet to the inlet manifold by a long way. Petrol turbos are different in as much as they are far less thermodynamically efficient than a diesel engine. Heat soak is a much greater problem for the majority of petrol setups.
