  • London to Devon surf-vival

I'm heading to my family for Christmas on Friday. I live in London and they are all in Devon. Now I am planning ahead here based on the recent weather and unprepared drivers as seen on the news. On a good day it's a 3h 45m trip however, if we were to get stuck in heavy snow and had to pull over for a while - what should we have with us in the surf?

So far we're taking: two winter duvets - camp stove and loads of fuel - shovel - tins of food - water - diesel - 12v leisure battery with lights etc - hot water bottles - tea candles - iPad 3G - cute doggy.

Any ideas how to stay warm in a parked car safely?

    Cheers and Merry Crimbo everyone.

I told the butcher I'd give him £25 if he got the meat down off the top shelf. He said he couldn't. The steaks were too high.

Don't use the stove inside the car, or you might get 'really' warm, or poisoned by the fumes.

I'd take a couple of 'Jerry' cans of extra diesel and use the car's own heater!

        Cheers

I'd be tempted to get a 12v kettle from Halfrauds (or similar) and some water, coffee, etc. if I was going to be really prepared.

The more stuff you pack, the less chance of breaking down or getting stuck, always works.

Sealable freezer bags and toilet paper.

A tin opener to go with your tins of food unless they're the uber fancy ring pull type.

              Black bin bags.

An ice scraper for defrosting the inside of the windows if you sleep in the truck in sub zero temperatures. You could let the heater do it but you'll then be driving a truck that steams up at the drop of a hat.

An unlubricated condom and a sock . It holds a litre of snow melt water and the sock stops it from bursting.

A sat nav so you don't get lost when you go and play on the untreated snowy backroads

Spare clothing - lots of layers.
                    Waterproof outer layer
                    Boots and thick socks (wool)
Wool or fleece hat and gloves.
Working gloves for when you digging yourself (or other people) out of the snow.
                    Lots of hot-drink makings
Blankets or insulated mat to lie on if you're going to sleep in the truck - you need insulation below as well as above you.
                    Phone and car-charger
                    Spare fuel for truck

TBH - if you're staying on main-ish roads, your biggest problem is likely to be other muppets getting stuck and blocking the road

once you have crossed the "border" tune into bbc radio devon (other radio stations are available) and listen out for the traffic reports they may help you with any diversions you have to take? others have said sat nav but a good map is always worth having most sat nav will not show hills or gradients
ps do not take any confrontational board games snow bound in a 4x4 is not fun
but tbh you should be fine.......

I've just done liverpool and back today 336mile, 6 hour round trip and managed to miss the traffic by setting off at 5am, steady 55-65 all the way and only trucks on the road for the first two hours. I recommend going early, its the town rush hour drivers who'll hold you up. H

Where are you going in Devon. All the main roads are OK now and will be fine in a Surf. The lanes and residential roads haven't been treated and are icy.
Try and plan a route to stay on A and B roads as long as possible.
