I have been looking at snow chains in case I ever get caught out in the mondeo (possible with the length of shift I do the weather can change alot).

The instructions clearly state that they are to be fitted on the drive wheels.
    Gone from 4x4 to 1x2

You would only put them on the drive wheels unless you had 2 pairs.
They are very effective last year I drove a Peugeot 806 up a very steep bank that was covered in black ice. (it rained then froze) I slid about 50 meters back down totally locked up until I hit a bank (no damage luckily)
When I got out I couldn't stand up
I got my chains out and they slid down the hill when I let go of them
When I eventually got them on I just drove up the hill like it was clear only problem was the noise/vibrations as no snow on the ground. With a covering of snow at slow speeds they are fantastic
Thankfully I have the Surf now so just leave the car at home

(after reading previous comments putting them on the front is totally stupid if you cant understand why stay at home in these conditions even in a 4x4)

Understeer is easy for the average person to figure out (why almost every road car understeers as standard) traction is the holey grail on snow and ice not stopping/steering power hence the reason you can go up steep hills in a 4x4 on snow/ice but cant stop or steer coming down them. If you understand this the last thing you want is more steering braking on a RWD car
          Traction is the key
