Arse clencher!, MOT today and the guy called me over while he was in it yanking the steering wheel about and said you know your power steering packs up when you apply the foot brake!! it had me stumped till i worked out that when standing still and turning the front wheels, the wheels need some rotational movement being big and wot with the extream offset etc, so i figured the pump belt aint quite tight enough which would account for the prob,
not noticed this when driving but then i wouldn't as the bl00dy wheels are turning anyway,
also saw him shaking his head while pulling the front wheels baout and thought " it's gonna fail this time" first time since i bought it, but it didn't, went through again
these guys just have to make some comment or other! suppose it's to justify pokeing about under your pride and joy for 20 mins and chargeing £35 for it, (and most of that time he spent eating his sandwiches) still he aint a bad lad,

know wot you mean, this guy (read youngish low-slung, elastic band tyred pugh enthusiast) spent more time eating his lunch than doing my truck, never did the emissions test, didn't put it on the rolling road, never checked the headlight beam alignment, he does know however that i always comply with reccomendations and get whatever offending item done asap, last time it was the front disc's and pads, anyway i got me ticket (which er-indoors paid for) so sod it

Ian, if you have wheel spacers or big offset rims the steering will feel tight if you try and turn it while the brakes are on.

The steering pivots around the ball joints, if your tyre is outside the line of the joints, it won't twist on the ground like normaly when the ball joints are inline with the center of the tyre tread, the wheel will have to roll as you turn the steering.

Ergo... If you press the brakes hard, the steering won't move. There's nothing wrong with apart for an MOT guy who dosn't understand mechanics...
