    Is that additives or hype?
It's additives, the base fuels are identical and may not be refined by the distributor.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

The additives are added to the tanker, they are not in the refined fuels.

So what's added to make it more fuel efficient? I'm assuming something that helps it burn more effectively.
        and if so,
shouldn't this be added in all fuels to, as we say "save the planet" or is it simply down to how much we're prepared to pay at the pump?

I don't know what's in the additives, they are all trade secrets.

which leads me to suspect it's a load of bollox.

I use Shell super for my BMW I have noticed a difference in performance..but try to find 5th Gear prog

                  5th Gear took 3 vehicles (astra ? / seat / scooby doo)
On a dyno and ran 3 fuels ? supermarket / BP ultimate and Shell super..

the best improvement was the scooby on shell an extra 40 BHP !!!

                  If my memory is correct...

No it's not. It's for reducing emmissions using a process called selective catalytic reduction. I fitted AD-BLUE fast fill nozzles today and had to read the data sheets. Doesn't mention a thing about fuel temps or stopping fuel freezing.
Makes the fuel smell nicer when it burns mind you.

My GT-Four felt like it had loads more power on Tesco Super Unleaded than 'ordinary' petrol. OTOH Texaco Super Unleaded didn't feel any different from normal fuel.

Isn't that down to these fuels being sold with a higher octane rating rather than an additive? We used to put octane boosters into out Scoobies and Skylines.

The base fuels are all the same though, the only things that differ are the additives.

Yes, but the octane increase comes from additives AFAIK. The reason it felt more powerful on one make of fuel rather than another with similar octane rating was probably due to other additives (or lack thereof).
