Journey's End is about a teenage boy being sent to the trenches in WW1 - serious I imagine.

Goodnight Mr Tom is a pretty famous tale about the friendship between a young boy from London who is evacuated to the countryside during WW2 and befriends an old chap, and then is called back to London by his mother.
