Pros and cons are down to each persons choice.
Personally I dont like the look of the rear mounted mounted spare, prefer it underneath out the way.
I suppose the downsides are if you ever need to change it, getting the rear mounted spare off is a bit easier than getting the underslung one out.
Also with the underslung you dont have to move it out the way each time you need to get in the back.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.
its probably just down to design styles at the time, one does something and all other makers jump on the bandwagon. Mines on the rear and gives no problems now, it used to get in the way a bit when hitching up the caravan but no great deal really.H
Which one is better depends on what your using the truck for. If your planning on offroading it then get a rear slung spare rather than underslung as talking from experience its easier if you get a puncture.
My first surf had underslung and I got a puncture in the middle of a muddy hill. When it came to changing it it was all clagged up with mud and clay. The bar to lower it wouldn't work so I had to lay on the floor fiddling about underneath .
Also if your fitting bigger tyres I'm not sure what size will fit as a spare on underslung.
I think it was just an optional extra, some have it, some don't.
As Koi has already said, the underslung one would be harder to get at if you needed it, especially if you're off road at the time. But the rear mounted one (mine is rear mounted on my SSR-X) is a bit of a pain because you have to swing it out of the way before you can open the boot. Not really as annoying as having to wait for the window to come down though, and if I have both hands free I do them at the same time anyway.
I'm also constantly aware that mine sticks out past the rear bumper so is vulnerable to be hit by other drivers, or while off road. Worst case it could dent the tailgate in and stop the window from opening.
Given the chioce I think I'd go for an underslung one, but there's not a lot in it and I certainly wouldn't let it make or break a deal if the other truck is better in other areas.
I like the rear mounted style, although we were 'shunted' up the back so to speak and required a replacement tailgate, but I suppose if it wasn't there the back would probably still have been damaged.
