When i lived in the Alps i always had Nokian Hakkapeliitta (non studded) fitted to my Alfa Romeo, and a set of chains in the boot.
Winter tyres are a must out there if you want to be able to get around!!
I don't believe there is anywhere in the UK that you will need studded tyres. Also they will be ruined if you drive any significant distance on tarmac.
As Judwak said, its all about driving style. On snow and ice its all about being smooth, and ice accentuates this need to be smooth on the gas and brakes, and to prepare for each corner in advance. Any sharp sudden maneuvers usually end in tears!!!

I have a very good friend who used to do Ice Speedway in Canada; it's very much like normal speedway, but on ice with one inch spikes moulded in to the tyres.
He 'retired' after a race where he came off his bike mid corner (the bit where the rear wheel slips the most) and someone ran over his knee.Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Been using BFG A/Ts for about 6 years now and only ever failed to get up a hill once in snow and ice in all that time. But I have to say I got further up the hill than any one else before I slid back down. I even towed a corsa that was stuck in over a foot of snow and ice up a hill on saturday night. I think BFG A/Ts are just about the best boots that you can fit and worth every penny

Neighbor (Italian) recommended this website http://www.snowchains.co.uk/main/index_4x4_chains.htm
He has been using some with the recent weather. I also see another car pass me with some on (not sure where they were from).
Ice is ice - even with my 12.5" wide A/Ts rubber on ice is just not suitable. They snow ploughed my friends road in Croydon. Even though I had come to a complete stop, the truck carried on down the hill another 5 metres at about 1mph as it was so smooth it was like a bownling alley. If they hadnt ploughed the road into a smooth finish that wouldnt have happened.Oh Nana, what's my name?

Just throwing that out there.
Considering the intelligence of some of the people on here, I felt further explanation was required; clearly I didn't explain it well enough for you.Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

I got both my sets from them and they are excellent. And they give an exchange service if you change vehicle and need a different size.
Nice friendly staff and helpful.
