Got an additional relay and very chunky cable running straight to the batteries for my headlights and I get flashed occasionally with Ring Xenon max uprated bulbs on dipped, very bright. I did not put in the wiring but is very simple to do and has to be cheaper than HID system, I don't really need anything any better.

i installed the Ring Xenon Max today after recommendation on this thread..

      pics...

as you can see they are very bright for saying there was no mod needed for the wiring, £26 tho!

      before...

So far i am happy.. but looking at the pics of McKirdy's HID upgrade, that will be next!!

          Vida,

That looks 100% better, just need to find some sidelights to match now. Can't help you with that one, the LEDs I bought have lasted less than a month and weren't that bright either.

Any suggestions for a good set of bright sidelights would be most welcome.

          Cheers

Can you take them off easy?

As they will be an MOT fail from 2012! as will aftermarket HiD lights.

Was so looking forward to putting a HiD kit on the surf as well!

matt have a look through some of the posts i can't remember which one but there is a page from the testers manual and even on the vosa site it is not mentioned about hids, I have a friend who is a mot tester so i will ask him and find out for sure

I work next to my councils MOt test station and they told me it was PROBABLY coming in.

But iof the governement can make more money from us they they probably will bring it in.

Another one was CHIPPED engine mods will also be a fail!

TBH the chipped ecu won't fail and hids won't fail as long as they meet the specific requirements laid down by vosa
remember when you only had to rivet plates on to cover holes that was around 81/82 for safety they decided all plates had to be welded or brazed on then brazing was stopped and it had to be seamwelded but you could get away with an inch of weld every inch and holes in wings were deemed as a fail but cover it with tape and it would pass showing white light on the back apart from reverse lights is a fail but stick a bit of black tape to cover it and it pass's its all about how the manual is interpreted and its also down a lot of the time to the mot testers discretion what might fail at one place will go through at another with a different testers interpretation of the manual
I would think we have at least one mot tester on here so it shouldn't be long before i'm either told i'm wrong or that its not going to happen with the mot requirements being changed

Interesting section about the future of MOT testing.

Does say lighting unit incompatability will eb a fail as well as engine Chip mods.

yep i've just looked at that but again it's a lot of posturing at the moment as it will undoubtedly end up on the testers shoulders as to what he deems a pass or fail
I'm not too fussed about it because unless the chips are obvious or the hids have been put in wrong or have not been set up properly then and the wiring has been bodged it shouldn't affect 90% of vehicles anyway IMO
I would hazard a guess that a lot of whats happening is because a lot of the carpark cowboys either don't know what they are doing with chipping and fitting aftermarket kits and as a result leave themselves open for the police to get involved then it's down to a, if it's got a recent mot then it's the testers fault b, the mot tester says that it's not a fail because the manual says its not c, police complain to vosa that these lights and chips are causing accidents and they have to find a way to stop it d, the mot laws get changed to keep the police happy and get the boy racers done with fixed penalties and make make money at the same time
I could be wrong but it seems to have been the case in the past with mot laws being changed to suit police and vosa for money making and criminal statistics

Do you mean where does the cable run from and to or where did I get the cable?

Cable looks like 12AWG to me but not measured it, Maplin or any electrical supplier / motor factor should be able to supply it. Runs from battery to relay and from there to headlights. Relay switched from stalk.

                            Cheers

The trouble with a HID bulb is they are longer than a normal halogen bulb. This means the light isn't generated at the reflector;s focal point, which can mean the wrong distribution pattern. If they start to measure that as well as alignment - you are - as they say - fcuked!

Cars with HIDs fitted as standard have reflectors designed with focal point to suit the longer bulb. I dare say aftermarket HID manufacturers will soon start making bulbs with similar form factors to current halogen types so there should be no issue then.

Ok i'll rephrase the question i would like to get the heavy duty cable already made up as i can't be bothered making it from scratch although if it has a wiring diagram i could follow it and make my own but i'm being lazy....
