  • Vibrator

Now that I have your attention...

My truck vibrates quite a bit most of the time, way more than my 2.4 did. Recently though, it's got worse. The whole thing vibrates when idling and it feels like it wants to rattle its self to pieces at about 60MPH.

Things it's not (or doesn't appear to be):

Wheel balancing, all 4 have been done twice by 2 different places, the wheels have also been swapped front to back and side to side with no change.

No difference in 4wd or 2wd.

Steering, it's all new and rock solid at the front.

Front brakes, all new and working perfectly.

Prop shaft, new UJs, prop alignment retained.

    Diff, no whining.

Engine and gearbox mounts are visually OK

Idle sped is around 600rpm, so not overly low.

    It's not a misfire either, it's a proper vibration.

Things it may be: rear wheel bearings are a bit noisy and I've not checked the back brakes for a while (brake pedal does not oscillate). But these don't explain the vibrations at idle.

Anyone got any other thoughts on what it may be? Or can you confirm rear bearings will cause vibrations like I have?

I fully understand I may have more than one fault with the truck, and I'm asking here because I can't get under the truck to check things at the moment.

Are you talking about the 3.0 ?

If so my one had been re-assembled with the balance shafts out of time and did exactly what you have posted....

Didn't get any vibration at all during my rear wheel bearing failure. First sign was diff oil p1ssing out of the hub. That may rule that one out.

Harmonic balancer? Or whatever the 3.0 has.

Not the rear bearings mate, mine were wobbling like bad teeth when I swapped them and I never noticed vibration, just wet backing plates and oily brake shoes.

                I don't think it's a bearing either.

I don't think the 3.0 has a harmonic balancer. The engine vibration is only really at idle; it seems to smooth out at higher revs.

I think I have more than one problem, one engine and one drive train.

I thought that too, but I can't see anything amiss with them. I'm not sure what happens to them when they fail. Some, like the gearbox one, have a kind of 'fail safe' built in to them.

Given the list you have ruled out.
The at speed issue, may be worn out trailing arm bushes.

Aye I think they do but if the rubber has split or come adrift it might cause this.
I think you do have 2 problems, I'd like a drive in it to see.
You get any weird noises in reverse?

Is the rear axle out of line perhaps?

On the engine - there's one on each side. Mine had been put back together with all the cogs misaligned. The 3.0 has a harmonic balancer too.

I'll live with it if it means stripping the front off!

I thought the 3.0 had a solid pulley? Didn't pay any attention to it to be honest.

Can't see how they would cause a speed related vibration. Have you had a similar thing before?
