  • looking to buy

I am looking to buy a Surf in the next 2-3 weeks and need to know what to look out for. When do belts need changing, what sort of gas mileage can I expect, what make of tyres are best for a road bias and how much amI looking at, are there specialist service agents or will it have to be a main dealer to do the work, can anyone recommend a good insurance firm (so far i am looking at £1200 f/comp with 18 months no claims at 38yrs old and they want a thatcham 2 immobiliser fitted)Also how do you spec them, what do the model no's mean, is there a luxury grading or is just a basic and a posh version. Any help gratefully recieved.

    Cheers steve.

P.S. If anyone has a nice one for sale with reasonable mileage (two tone paint and a thatcham 2 would be nice but not essential) for £5-6K then let me know. 07967 812418 TA.

      Hi welcome to the forum

Models from the bottom up SSR, SSR LTD, SSR-V, SSR-X, SSR-G But you will probably find different specs on the same model motor as the Japs seem to add lots of extra's of their own.

Tyres, If your looking at road biased tyres then most of the top brand names are good on the road.

Insurance, try Liverpool & Victoria, Tesco's, Adrian Flux, also search on this forum for insurance its been covered in depth before.

Cam belt 100,000kms, run of the mill bits filters etc are easy to come by, as for servicing a good garage that is good on diesel motors should be able to carry out any servicing.

MPG, from 22-27mpg depending on 2.4 or 3.0 and style of driving and journey.

Has anyone got one for sale, well look under Surfs for sale on this forum.
Finally look here for some really good advice on buying

Oh and i thought it only far to tell you seeing as its not clear in the previous post he is a dealer. Now I am not saying he won't give good advice and I am not saying he will I can't comment on that I am just purely advising you that he is a full time dealer/garage.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

        thanks

        Thanks guys
i know i look like an easy mark but you can rest assured that i am not. I'm just new to the 4 wheel drive thing and unfamiliar with the models. i wont be buying an overpriced dog.
I am a tad concerened with the whole cracking head thing tho. Whats all that about?

        Cheers
        Steve

          Heads on 2.4's

Quite simply the heads on the 2.4 models are prone to cracking the 3.0 are not. I am not aware of a warranty that covers the head, we simply underlook to cover the heads ourselves. So try to get cover from the dealer which includes it or a vehicle that has been fitted with a new head(not reconditioned) otherwise if it goes you are looking at £1000 plus.
I personally would suggest you save up for a 3.0 but thats just my personal view, the cars the same except for the engine.
I am a dealer, but dont worry I am 200 miles away from you and no longer importing 2.4's!
