It's just a telly. Buy the cheapest, nicest looking one that's not from tescos.

My thoughts exactly, but then again Im one of those people who is quite happy listening to music on a lo-fi and is so far managing to cope without an I phone, I pad , Sat Nav or sundry other hi tec devices. I dont therefore consider myself capable of giving advice on TVs. Mind you if it makes Corrie and X factor worth watching, go for the best that money can buy.

Wow! Thanks Guys, loads of input here,as I expected.
Spent the day sweeping the neighbours chimneys, and the wife wisked me off to town for some christmas shopping this afternoon,as we only have a couple of weekends before christmas before we come to Angleterre for the last week before Christmas!

I found an LG telly this afternoon in LeClerc (Tesco's if you like) for €585 which I thought was a faily good price. As far as I can make out the resoulution is 1365x768,with integrated TNT(freeview). The freeview is no good for me but my kids can understand it OK.
Does anyone know if I can recieve HD Sky transmisions FOC here in France without paying? I'm a tight sod and refuse to pay for any telly!
I did read a review that said choose Samsung,LG or Panasonic and forget the rest!!!
Having said all this we're only looking for general viewing IE Eastenders,One show and crap like that, and the occasional film!

Albanach, you mention your daughter has a 50" telly and it's "tiresome" is that because of the size of the lounge? We would be sitting about 5 meters away from the telly!
As regard the heat generated,if it saves me putting another log on the wood burner thats only a good thing, theres no central heating in my house!!

          Many Thanks

          Regards

          Mark

We did a lot of research and viewing. To my eyes, the only others we saw that came close picture-wise to the LGs were Sonys at much higher price. We looked at LED ones too, but the price premium for the thinness just wasn't worth it.

Amazon is worth a look for lowest prices.
The LG tellys seem to be top of the list but we need to buy here in France as the practicalities of transporting said telivision is too difficult along with 2 tons of Mr Kipling mince pies,Mrs Peake christmas Puddings and all the kids Presents Etc is Too difficult, but if Amazon deliver that might be an option!!!

ideal viewing distance from display is 3-5 times screen size diagonal measurement.

If you can get an English address to post the card to SKY reception in France should be fine

Yep, her lounge is too small for a TV that size, one has to constantly look around the screen to take everything in. I, personally, think that 5m is still too close for a 50" TV? But each to their own.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

I have sky already without a viewing card.I'm not prepared to pay for viewing as most of the time I just fall asleep in front of the telly anyway, but I thonght BBC and ITV transmissions were free to air,or is that not the case?

Best not let my wife read your reply cause she is in agreement with you(she thinks she may get motion sickness),but my kids want the biggest, but they are only 5 and 7!!!!

BBC transmissions are free to air, and they are not carried by the Sky satellite, the beeb have a bird co sited in the sky that was much cheaper than the price Sky wanted to carry their transmissions

Oh! so my Hd tv,without coughing up is limited to ITV transmissions!
So 760 or 1080 is academic! My French neighbours still think I'm mad, because they are quite happy to huddle round a 20" CRT telly and think its the dogs dangles!!!!

No your sky box will pick up BBC stuff fine, the BBC channels were carried by the Sky satellite until a few years ago, then Sky wanted too much money and the beeb went elsewhere, enjoy your purchase.. your probably the talk of the town, "that english ...with his widescreen TV and he drives a Surf"

I remember when we were kids, we used to get given a TV every few years or so (when they broke). Our grandad gave us one once that was used for one of the William Hill teletext monitors. Was a big TV but had no internal speaker and the buttons were strange!
Another time someone gave us one for me to use for my Commodore 64. We found out after months of me trying to tune it in that it was digital only. It was a CRT, dont know where it came from. This was back in around 1990. Suppose it would have worked now though.
                            Oh Nana, what's my name?

Albannach, I find films more involving if my eyes have to move around the screen to take things in. That was the main impact my first 'big screen' telly had on me. Cinema works that way. Each to his own though.
