I'd buy the latest 2nd gen I could find and spend the left over cash on new shocks, springs, bushes, brakes, radiator, full service etc.
Parts availability puts me off the 3rd gen. You can get almost everything for the 2nd gen from R'trax and Milners.
If you have a good Toyota dealer you can get anything for a 3rd gen usually within 48hrs, I have used Pentagon Toyota for loads of bits including colour coded body trims still needed guidance from Vince (Bushwhacker) on how to fit them though !
Sorry to sort of highjack your thread but, why can you drive the 3rd gen in 4wd on tarmac and not the 2nd?? For some bizarre reason I thought it was the same for both?? (made me quite paranoid)

Because the 3rd gen has a centre diff.

yoshie "Didn't know they had a pill for laziness, anyway get well soon."
get a third gen , leave the 2nd gens to peeps who liked to be towed out of mud and have plenty of time waiting for them to do your hair etc , cos ur worth it
Theres a 3rd gen on ebay for 2150 or best offer. Seller claims that the price is low only because its the allegedly superior, quieter, smoother running, more modern, less agricultural 2.7 petrol engine.( which only the discerning few seem to want) Its low miles and looks to be half decent.
Id say it was well worth a look at least.

AHHHHHHHH......so that explains why one of my neighbours drives a pajero!......
sorry to hear about the crash. glad you and the missus are ok though.
i quite often encounter drivers of the female variety driving big 4x4s and not knowing how to drive them or understand the size of the vehicle. I live in hope that i dont have the same incident as yourself.
Fingers crossed...I looked at a rather nice 2nd gen 3.0 SSR-X a couple of nights ago. I'm going up to see it again tomorrow...with cash in my pocket.
It looks really well kept, engine was fine on the test drive, and the guy uses it regularly. He's selling it cos it's too juicy...I neglected to tell him that veg oil is 75p/litre from Costco.
The only thing is, it has no 'roo bar or spotlights...so I took the nice bar and spots off my dead one (the insurance company let me cos it's not standard) but I couldn't get the brackets off. Anyone up for fabricating some and fitting it for me? I'll need the spots wired up too but funnily enough, on the dashboard is the exact same switch that's on my last one, so the electrics may well be there, just waiting to be connected. Anyone fancy giving me a quote? It looks like this:
