I bought mine in August off stormy from this parish! Its the only vehicle that i have ever bought/drove that I took ownership of straight away, have massive plans for, money permitting and it puts a smile on my face EVERY time I get in it. This will probably be my only car for a very longtime (unless I am forced to buy a van for work!).
yes the mpg is shocking (on mine anyway) but if I bought a runabout then I would have to tax it and insure it and still put fuel in it, so I just spend the money on extra fuel on the surf.
I would not touch a modern vehicle with a barge pole, with all thier crap build quality and iffy electronics.

                Example of above:

Put badly filtered waste veg oil in and blocked fuel system, drained tank blew down the fuel lines, new filter and it started no problems, I know very little about diesel or any other mechanics, never even changed filters before the surf.
Installed a cheap ebay remote central locking unit, took me an hour. You try that with newer vehicles.
NO don't sell it you will regret it bitterly.
If you can't keep it because you cant afford it then thats different, I would sell the golf and spend money on the surf!!!
Sorry for the long post but I feel very strongly about surfs, as you may have noticed!
                l'm FAME-ous!

I bought Apaches' old surf to replace my 2nd gen 3litre and I love it to bits. I bought it because it was my favourite looking surf and partly because I wanted to do the same mods to my truck, but after adding it all up it was much cheaper to buy a truck with it all done, and I wanted an auto version.

Now we have a new baby and i've lost my job I can't afford the road tax or to fix some very small things required to get it through it's MOT, but it's SORN'd and cosy in the garage waiting for more money to come in. But alot of people keep telling me (and I mean pressuring me ) to sell it and get something sensible like a nice people carrier or a volvo, they point out it's old and little things keep breaking on it, that it's too tall and they don't like it and it really would be a sensible choice to get rid.

Now the way I think about it is that for start I frikkin like it and that should be enough reason to keep it, but also all the cars I look at even ones from 2000 onwards don't seem to be very reliable, alot of audis and volvos seem to have gearbox or other serious problems that are really expensive to fix. Plus anything over 2001 with a bigger engine, you get nailed with expensive tax bands.

Whereas with the surf, parts are considerably cheaper than newer cars, I don't have to remove a hundred stupid plastic panels if I want to get to a part and it's easier for me to work on so it doesn't need to go to the garage as often. There's great guides on here for fixing things and there's great support when asking questions.

I've had a Nissan 200sx, Celica GT4, Skyline R32 GTS, Skyline R32 GTR and a Mitsubishi Legnum VR4 and honestly the surf is by far my favourite of them all. It's like a big faithful dog that'll go with you anywhere.

Thinking about selling it feels odd, wrong. It's abit like someone pressuring me to sell one of my dogs. It's only a machine I know but I don't think some people realise how much a car means to someone.

I think i'm starting to know how apache felt when I drove it away from his house

FFS...it's a pile of plastic and metal, it's probably nudging 20 years old...but mrs GWH loves the look of it, so does my enthusiastic 10 year old...it's not going anywhere. And when it's beyond repair...garden ornament.

                        hahaha, what a great thread!

I remember when the wheel bearing on mine (now Oneidadan's) broke in Spain. It was like it was 'injured' rather than broken. When it was repaired, it was like a faithful old hound coming back to get me home, whatever it took. It was then faultless on the 900km continuous slog across Spain to catch the rest of the group. I 'loved' that truck, maybe because we'd been together nearly 7 years, and there was a lot of my blood, sweat and tears invested in it.

The GT-Four... well, as hard as I tried, I couldn't feel the same. It was a machine, and I always felt that if it broke, it would break in a big way. it wouldn't 'want' to work like the old truck did. It was petulant and stroppy.

Now I have another truck I've yet to make my mark on, but the smile is back, and will only grow as I cut holes here, hammer things there, get bl00dy knuckles etc etc.

Strange. Like Gra said, they're just a lump of metal and plastic... or are they? Clarkson reckons some vehicles have 'soul'. Maybe the Surf is one of them?

Thought he had a Lightning? Seem to remember it being delivered and his missus being p1ssed off about an artic on the lawn

Maybe he has more than one? There's a farmer near here has a couple of Hunters (one in grey / green camo and one of Bedford's 'Aviation Medicine Flight' ones in the old raspberry ripple colour scheme) - nice.

Spot on ! Logic doesn't really apply with a Surf owner. And.. as someone else said, they really DO get under your skin. I always have the biggest smile on my face driving mine. And... it feels safe, and solid. Unfortunately, if anything does go wrong I have to get someone else to fix it, being a girl there's only so much I can do... like greasing bump stops and attacking any visible rust; but... the good thing is that I have a really good local mechanic who is brilliant ! So can't complain.

                              Part with it.. never !
                              Love me Love my Surf!
