    Hi all

    just joined up

my names Steve and I've been into vee dubs for years and now fancy a huge change, so selling up and looking for a 4x4, narrowed my search to 75% surf and 25% pajero, so thought i'd join up here, see wht to look for and hopefully get some pointers and sway me to 100% surf

so i might have some questions, but any advice on what to look /lookout for would be great

    thanks

    Hi Lawsy,
Welcome to the best Surf Forum bar none!

I owned a Pajero before changing to a Surf. Couldn't wait to get rid of the Pajero. Sloppy steering, bulky & sluggish.
The Surf 3.0 however was a revelation! Owned mine now for 7 years & still love it to bits!
My suggestion would be a Surf 3.0 over the 2.4. Others may disagree of course, it's all down to personal choice & budget. Currently most of the vehicles on here are 1st, 2nd & 3rd generation models. Hunt around a bit on the forum & you'll soon get the hang of what's what.
I promise you, you'll not be sorry if you buy a Surf, so long as it's a decent one.
The guys & gals on this forum do like a bit of banter, which can take a bit of getting use to but the knowledge they have is simply brilliant!

    Have fun!
    Tony

place full of nutters - thats cool then, i should fit right in.. lol

looking round i think i prefer the look of the surf over the pajero hands down..

as to budget, well i need to sell my dubs and should hopefully have around 1500 - 2k to get myself one

whats the auto boxes like, everyone i seem to see for sale is auto

got a few ideas rattling around in my head for how i'd like one in time, just looking forward to getting into a decent sized truck instead of running round in on the ground dubs...

still trying to suss the navigation of the site, i se reference to 'my rigs' section, but where is it??

The site was recently hacked by jealous pajero owners( that's my story and I'm sticking to it). There are various bits of the site on the dole...ie not working.
this is till the computer people weld up the hard server and fo a 2" inch lift on the software...or whatever it is that computer people do.
          Non intercooled nothing.

The top end of your budget should just about buy you a half decent 3.0 2nd gen. Another £500 would buy you a really good one.
Auto boxes are real beauts & pretty much bomb proof. Manuals seem to be few & far between & I think cost a bit more.
The best bit of advice I would give you however, is to service & maintain it as it should be. It'll probably outlast you then!

            regards

              cheers for that

so i'm guessing the my rigs bit is down now..

well, if anyone interested, this is one of my wagons up for sale - http://retrorides.proboards.com/inde...W&thread=90727

once thats gone, then the other one and await my bonus from work, should hope to be in a surf by year end..

i've heard lots of reports of head issues on the 2.4 - is it true or is it ones that haven been looked after propely

as to regular maintenance i'm a strong beleiver of preventative maintenance is much better than fix it if its broke..

guess i need to learn difference betwen gen 1/2/3 then..

the ones i've been looking atseem to be around 88-94 is that a gen 2?

'My Rigs' bit is down for now along with a few other bits. 'The Management' are no doubt working as hard as they can & intend to 'come back' with a more secure & possibly more functional platform fairly soon.
They're good guys & won't let us down.

From the info on this forum, the 2.4,s do seem to have a weakness issue to the head. Having to replace one, would cost a tidy packet, so that's something to watch out for! You do hear about the odd 3.0 head aswell but seemingly quite rare & generally put down to poor maintenance.

As to the gen years, I am not sure & wouldn't want to steer you wrong.
There are other guys on here who can tell you that chapter & verse.
Hopefully someone will be along soon with the info. (My '94 is a 2nd gen.)

Now you'll have to convert from slamming to lifting!

                regards

If i'm just planning on general use, (will be a second car) odd tirp to work, mainly for use more at weekends, not planning to go off-roading (yet)

so shoudl i stay clear of the 2.4 if there is a head issue, or is it like everything, dont let it get too hot and all should be well??

I'm not scared of spannering, but would rather not have to..

as to lifting isntead of slamming, then thats for sure - need to give my teeth a break - current dub is rolling with a 70-80mm drop..

                    Hi welcome.

I used to have a few dubs and still have the roof rack for your motor if interested.

I'd definitely go for the 3.0 ltr gen 2 model ssr g is the nuts top of the range if you can get one.

Get the best you can afford and enjoy.

just shocked myself, cant beleive how much extra insurance companies want to insure one..

                      wasnt expecting that....

migth have to re-think for now, or get even more pennies together

I'm used to adding / swapping dubs and most extra I've ever paid for insurance was about £60 - they want an additional £450 to dd a 93 2.4 surf on

Sounds like you give up far too easily. Depending on your age, NCB, points on license & especially location, certain insurance companys will offer a very good deal indeed! Lots of members on here have fully comp for around the £250 mark. Some a bit more & some a bit less!
From your previous posts you seem to have some time to work these things out, so don't rush into a decision without doing a little more research first.

who said anything about giving up

just said it shocked me for now, wasnt expecting it..

still on for getting one, might rethink for now (as in my budget) so look for a slightly older model, maybe with not so many toys etc etc

or save up a few more pennies so i can still get within the budget and insure it too (as i dont do credit cards anymore - learnt the hard way)

phoned a few different companies this am, all based ona 93 2.4 - they all wanted over £500, trouble is I have had for the last few years motorbikes, so cant carry over any no claims etc, then 2.5 years ago i had a child run out in front of me, missed child (just), but hit a parked car by doing so, since then I'm on a multi car policy so have no no claims that can be used...
I can add to it, the multicar policy has a new shape passat and 2 older ones on it and its under £500 for the year fully comp with commuting etc - to add on a hilux to that policy they want to pretty much double it..
