  • German domestic electrical wiring

After helping a friend move house to Germany I said i would install her cooker, only to find German houses have 3 phase wiring.
So it was a bit of surfing on the mobile to decipher the colour codes before I connected it up.... but a 3 phase cooker

can you imagine a 3 phase electric shower or 3 phase kettle, toaster....

Surely the 3 phases are broken down. I used to live in Cyprus, out there they have 3 phase supplies to the house, the 3 phase is then broken down into 3 different circuits.

No...all three phases are present at the cooker wiring point and German cookers have the necessary wiring to hook up...
yes things like lighting in the house etc and tapped off a single phase...but big loads are 3 phase..

If the cooker runs backwards, swap two of the phase wires over.

Is this becoming a standard here now?
i ask because a bungalow here has just been re-wired (apparantly for mortgage purposes) and had to have 3 phase put in.

EEEK! They must have controls so you cant wire two adjacent objects to different phases, because a shock when touching both could see you getting over 400V across you!

Don't know (cos I never asked the sparks) but because of the age of the property, only about 30 years, it had to be re-wired "to european spec" apparantly. The people selling it were from Norway but the company doing the work were local.

The oven i recently fitted was Italian, it had wiring instrutions for single/three phase installation...

The cooker will have a diag inside the back somewhere.
They can be wired for 3 phase or single.
3 phase is better, the load is shared.
