I have noticed I have a coolant leak coming from behind the bottom pulley on the front of the engine. Any ideas? Is that the water pump I take it?

Possible, but check the small diameter coolant pipes on and above the thermostat housing first, they could be leaking and coolant is running down.

I did remove the thermostat housing pipe does it need sealing with a rubber o ring or just a STD gasket?

I would replace the O ring, it'll be old and perished at nearly 20 years old.
