Physically yes, need a manual truck propshaft and gearbox crossmember.

There is a big bunch of wires that go to the ECU from gearbox though, I don't know how this would effect the way the motor runs.

Personally I prefer the auto, especially if offroading lots.

Cheers Tony, its mainly for the economy, I've not been off roading much yet though my job involves it all the time(agricultural/equestrian fencing)but then I've only had it 2 weeks Its probably best to leave it as is would you think?

Hi Paul. If you're looking for cheaper running costs, why not look at running it on biodiesel, or a mineral / SVO / WVO blend. You would save more, and not have to loose the auto box. Theres loads of info on the subject.....Good luck....Mick.

Cheers Mick, i used to run my golf on svo about 50/50 but didnt now if running the surf like that would damage it. 70% diesel 30% oil in winter is what ive read on here, does that sound about right?

You would be better off with something like 80-85% veg and 15-20% petrol. Get some veg oil, say 1 litre and add 10% petrol to it and stick it on your window sill outside, then have a look every morning and see if it gels up, if not then thats your mix. If its gelling up then add more and more petrol, maximum is about 20%.
Also fit a FPHE and that should warm up your fuel quickly.
Look on the stickies and see other peoples experiences.
I ran mine on 100% veg but its a pig to start it, just as well its got 2 batteries!
              l'm FAME-ous!

I have noticed that the auto is actually better on fuel,on the motorway than the manual, anyway,it revs lower!

I think it would take you a long time to get your investment back,if ever!!

                  Regards

Auto revs lower? I would have to disagree{a polite way of saying b ollocks} having had both in the past and currently own both. My 3rd gen will pull from 30mph easily in 5th and will happily sit at 35/40mph in 5th at 1200rpm. Try getting an auto to stay in top gear at those speeds.

Or you could just do the mod that allows locking the torque converter at any time, meaning you can stay in top on a flat road down to about 40mph. The box changing down at around 50 ~ 55mph really screws your economy.

Personally, I did around 130 motorway miles on 1/3rd of a tank in a petrol 2.7 3rd gen on Saturday - which seems somewhat better than my old 3.0TD used to do. Mind you, that was on 33s on a big lift with spotlights on the roof!

I was seriously considering including "unless you build an apache mod" but decided there is enough arguements on this board of late. It was really just a shamless plug to try and get my 3rd gen a southern market

Yoshie, I don't think there is a polite way to say b8llocks.

You're comparing 2nd gen to 3rd gen.My comparison is between my my 1995 manual 4 runner and my mates 1994 auto surf import. At 70 mph mine sits at 2900 rpm,his sits at about 2500 rpm. This is what I meant by revs lower!

Maybe all the b ollocks you were talking has got you excited.

But please not for me, keep that between you and your mpg comparing mate.
