  • Bumpers needed

    Hi Guy's,
Been lurking around this forum for a while now, Had my SSR G 130for about 6 years, fantastic vehicle.

With information from this site i recently fitted a nice roof rack, got it off a Mitsubishi space star for £10.00 at my local breakers. It was the only one i could find at a suitable length, it had two fixing points at each end which allowed me to scribe and fettle the ends to meet the profile of my roof. Taking all the interior out was a giggle, never attempted anything like it before , lawn covered in panels , sunroof and broken studs etc.

Now looking to replace my back bumper ensemble, due to the chrome flaking off. Is the best option Replacement panels from " Rough Tracks " ? Or is there a cheaper outfit, Couldn't find anything on the Milner site!

Thanks for any help in advance , Martin

Good used rear bumpers seem to bee like rocking horse poo at the mo - I've been on Stormforces' waiting list for a set for a while now.
I've no idea what the pattern ones are like.
    Anyone got experience of them?
I seem to recall a thread a little while back that reported rust problems.

I've thought about buying the full back set from Roughtrax, but £70.00 odd a corner and what ever it is for the back seem a bit steep.

I was wondering if it were possible to paint over chrome, best method? maybe an etched primer or something. That way doing away with the chrome on the back .

Hi Martin. Depends how bad the rust is. If you paint over rusty chrome, it might just keep rusting and flaking under the paint (even if you prep it well ). Another option might be to source a full set of factory painted bumpers (they never seem to rust ) from a breaker. Depending on the colour of your truck, you might get a colour match, and not have to do any painting. Good luck....Cheers....Mick.

                So Guy's !
Looks like I'll have to take them off and attack them with the grinder then ! I suppose i could try and strip back the chrome until i reach good clean metal, then treat with acid and the special paint that goes with the kit.
Should i rough the chrome with say 80 grit paper before using a primer? which primer is best on chrome ?
Can't afford all three pieces of bumper at the moment so i guess the repair with fiber glass is the best way to go. Maybe I'll take some pic's as i go for a giggle for reference.
My motor is "M" reg dark blue, any idea if i can get the right colour match ?
Where can you get the paint from?

Paint code should be on your VIN plate.

                    Cheers Sloba,
What i forgot to mention was i have big holes in the bumpers as well as the rust flaking off been like it a while now so will have to do extensive glass repair/filler.
Thanks for putting that link up

If the rusting eats through from the back of the bumper as it has on mine, by the time it has got so far as the chrome on the 'display' side, all is lost.
I had wondered about the viability of getting my local grp guys to cast some bumpers in laminate. Obviously they'd not be as bashworthy as steel, but they wouldn't rust & could be finished in any colour, including metalised chrome.

Yes i realise they are absolutely ....cked ,but thats all i have to work with, maybe they will last for a while ?

My old man had a heavy duty wheelbarrow that he could not replace with lots of iron worm. He gave it the full rust treatment , hammerrite the works, lasted for ages. Probably spent £20 on paint and filler etc when a new one was a £10 ( while back ).

It might have taken him over 20 to 30 hours to compleate the repair, but it got him away from the Mrs to have a crafty fag in the garage.

well i know i can use that tape and it will look very good on the bumpers
i used miles of the stuff
so take off ya bumpers and apply with a damp cloth very slowly any bubbles
need to be slit with a craft knife and rubbed over with a dry cloth

it will be perfect if done right
i may do it to mine
                              if its keeping its bumpers?

                              are bumpers staying on vince?
