early 3rd gen transfer box problem

hi guys

got a n reg 3rd gen auto thats got the 2nd gen transfer box in it.
The problem is the 4wd is not working. when i push the switch i can hear a click underneath. i have seached previous threads and havent got anywhere.
Is the 3rd early system the same as the 2nd gen using the vacum hoses etc under the bonnet as i can not see these.

Any ideas
