  • new user, looking into buying a surf...

Hi guys, been toying with the idea for a little while now, but finally decided that I'll own one sooner or later! Looking for one of the older early 90s ones

Few questions though....my mate has an old Land Rover 110, how far off is the off road capability of a surf to this? After something reasonably well usable both on and off road.... I'm not that clued up with 4wd systems etc, but does it have selectable 2wd/4wd? High/low range? Diff lock? (doesn't mean much to me, but was told to find out)

Other question is, will I actually be able to get insured? I'm 20 with 3 yrs no claims.....

If I think of anything else I'll be sure to post

    Cheers

    Sam

Welcome to the nuthouse mate, the surf is a very capable offroad vehicle but as with many 4x4's a lot of it is down the the drivers ability as well the vehicle itself, tyres for instance will have a large bearing on how it performs off road, yes it does have selectable 2/4wd and hi/low range but the model your after will have no centre diff so don't drive it in 4wd on tarmac or other hard surface, no diff locks as standard either but can be fitted.

But some are fitted with a rear LSD, which if in good condition helps a lot.

As has been said, out of the box it isn't as capable as a Defender but the driver is a big factor. On the flip side, Defenders are awful, agricultural, noisy, unreliable things with lots of creature-discomforts.

Horses for courses. If ALL you're gonna do is extreme offroad, look elsewhere, but if you want a pleasant daily driver that will go to 95% of the places a Defender will go to (and not break every weekend) a Surf is a better choice.

        Hi and welcome,

Mate of mine had a 110 and I liked it a lot, but 1 trip to Scotland and he sold it and bought a Nissan Patrol. He was deaf for 2 days!!

The surf is the most comfurtable thing I have sat in for a longtime, its good around town as its not too wide, I am happy with the performance too, it can be a beast compared to your average mondeo.
Big boot in the back and can tow a trailer if you need it.

Only thing with mine is the fuel consumption is quite high (partly my own fault as I drive like a banshee!) but then I mostly use, waste veg oil so hey who cares!

For me this an important bit: For the money its one awesome machine, I will buy other cars in the future but as I said to swimbo, I am keeping this one!

Thanks for the comments, the main reason I want one of these as opposed to a defender is because I do a fair bit on the motorway as well, and would like to do it comfortably!

Both me and my mate are pretty new to the game but a couple of weekends going through the local fords and green lanes has pretty much got me hooked...not sure I'd go on some of the lanes we went in the defender though as his is hammerited black so he doesn't really care about scratching it! lol.

But unlike him I thought about practicality first....and being used to modern-ish cars things like an interior light and a stereo are pretty much a requirement....lol. My dad very nearly bought a surf a few years back but ended up with a Lucida instead, surprisingly I enjoyed driving around in that too.....plus with it being a jap import, working out how to use all the toys....

So thats me pretty much sold other than the insurance part of it.......anyone a similar age to me know what I'm likely to pay? The Escort is costing me about 800 a year at the moment on 2yrs ncb but given a couple of months that'll be 3yrs (touch wood), clean license etc too.

          Cheers
