  • Selling and test driving

What is the situation if you are selling a vehicle and some one wants to test drive it first. Should you ask for driving licence and proof of insurance?
    Worst case scenario.
My concern is that they test drive and damage the vehicle in the process, i.e. an accident, how will it go down with your insurance company as the driver will only be covered for third party on his insurance.
This happened to an acquaintence of ours but I never got feedback on the outcome as we moved house.

Just mention in conversation, that if they scratch or bend it without paying for it, they won't be going home standing up!

When I've needed to test drive vehicles I've used www.tempcover.com to get one day insurance.

And, I won't let a prospective buyer test drive one of my cars without seeing a driving license and a cover note.

Never allow anybody to test drive your car unless they show you proof of comprehensive cover for YOUR car/truck. I was dubious about letting people have a go in mine because even if they have fully comp insurance on their own car, they only have third party on yours.

I have trade insurance now so I can own up to 20 vehicles, Jap Imports, modded vehicles, whatever. Other than named drivers, it covers anybody to drive them as long as I or a named driver is present. It cost me £450 a year with RSA (used to be Sun Alliance) through DNA Insurance. Well worth the money and much cheaper than the 2 separate policies I was paying for before.

Not really practical for a private sale. I'd do it by phone whilst stood next to the car rather than go home. What would you do if you transferred the cash, went to collect the car and they'd fecked off, lock, stock and barrel, two skid marks, fat pockets and big grins?

Tintin has taken the free leeter away. It has good provenance(and a less than a year old stevo head). Alan has followed this motor, and its pedigree is good...but he bought it from a mate. As for buying or selling privately...just take as much care as possible...and be legal.
