  • Strange free wheeling hubs

My FWH are strange! My offside one began rattling for no reason. Over odd road bumps and things.
Then it went quiet again, and on the A3 on some odd road surfaces it made some serious buzzing noises! After a few noises which were seriously loud to hear at 70mph inside the cab with windows closed all is quiet once again...

    They are roughtrax AVM hubs.

I used to have issues with the near side making noise. This was because of the shaft bolt / washer catching on the hub. Neither side has this bolt in now because of the catching. All has been fine for weeks and all is fine now, but why are they making noise?
    Oh Nana, what's my name?

First coat the cat in it (though maybe this should be on your armageddon thread...)

As far as i know you dont have to "pack " em with grease but i did brush the splines with it when fitting, the noise aint that small bolt come out is it?, the one that goes in the end of the stub axel, both mine were out and rolling about when i removed the FWH's to do the discs, cant see what use they are and theres seems no way of locking em, i did put em back but there prob rattleing around again

Cheers for the replies. What grease did you use, copper grease or CV grease?

The bolt did fall out of mine and was rolling around but I didnt hear any noises from it. I dont have any bolts in there at all because when they are in it makes the FWH part grab the drive shaft and make a bang noise randomly.

They're there to catch the driveshaft if the circlip gives up the ghost. To tighten them, lock the driveshaft (I use the inner flange bolts) and torque it as you would any other bolt.

have you removed the fwh lately???........if so did you re fit them in the unlocked position?????,try removing them again and fitting them back on in the locked position. i had this trouble also and i re fitted them back on in the locked position and they have been fine ever since.i have no idea why,all i can guess is that the large spring and cup washer was not quite seated properly and they were rubbing on the drive shaft.

                            Update,
I drove the truck the other night and the noise was so bad I thought the wheel spacer was coming loose on the off side. When it vibrates you can feel it pull as well.

I took the off side hub apart. First came off the lock / unlock section. Couldnt see anything wrong there, nothing sticky or loose. Little dirty thats all.
Then I took off the part that replaces the standard Toyota part. Soon as I had it in my hand I could hear the rattle. I shook it and there it was.
Looking closer, the toothed section is held in by circlips. It was the toothed section that is vibrating around when the wheel hits small bumps and things.

I bought a tub of CV grease, and packed both sides of this with a generous amount of grease and then refitted everything IN THE LOCKED POSITION as suggested.

No longer any noises or strange goings on at all.

This means I can drive without making people jump, or turn around

Also fitted my boost gauge and somehow I'm boosting at 11psi. This could explain the overheating under high load as the standard exhaust system thats on there now is in dire need of replacing.
