Cant remember what it was called, but 'Security Centre' rings a bell. Keeps flashing up 'windows like' messages saying this and that are infected with various trojans. Nasty bugger. Took two days of farting about to remove it completely.

A couple of lads at work had the same problem. One of them emailed Hotmail and they said they'd look into it. It happened again and he sent them another email, this time they closed his user account and advised him to register again with another user name!

It seems like they don't know how to get rid of this problem either, Will. I don't see any reason why you should close your current Hotmail account if you don't want to but to save you a heap of hassle it may be worth considering.

It's unlikely that changing your password or even closing your hotmail account will work. The spammers will have either broken into your account ages ago and stolen your entire address book or found an email that includes your email address. They use these details to send out the fake emails from a different email server and make it look like it's coming from you. Anyone who has access to a email server could fake ANY address in about 2 seconds.

They do it to trick people into opening dodgy emails/viruses. Nothing you can do about it I'm afraid.
