atf cooler

I know this has be talked about alot on here but i can't find anything about fitting one to a 3rd gen auto.
I want something decent as i do alot of heavy towing but at the same time i can't afford to pay alot at the moment.
If anyone has any ideas for a decent cheapish one for a 3rd gen can you let me know and i take it it is the same as fitting for a 2nd gen auto aswell.

I got mine from the local scrappy, £20, it came off a vauxhall, 8 row and roughly 2ft long, I wanted the one from a rover75 auto as it looked brand new, (there engines tend to explode at 75000) but scrapman wanted £50 so took the cheaper option, the best thing with the 75 is the intake/output pipes are the same side where you plumb into the pumped side and wouldn't need much hose, the one I got is in one end out the other. It works though, no leaks and my water temps haven't went past 90 since fitting it in the valance. H

13 row MOCAL cooler, fitting kit and 5m of 3/8" hose, £74.00 plus VAT delivered.

fitted a treat (in fact still got a fair bit of hose left)

I picked this type as its only about 6in deep, the rover one is similar size and fits a treat in that space, I don't reckon it needs to be a great big mutha just enough to dissipate some heat before it hits the rad, seems to do the job anyway. Hawai, if you look back here what was the towing like temp wise? H

Try looking for an mgb oil cooler on ebay this is what I used to have on my truck.

I have just fitted one bought from an Ebay retailer. An Australian made unit which came with all the fittings - as below.

Fitted easily behind one of the gaps in the front bumper. I haven't done any heavy towing with it yet so can't report on its efficiency but it must do some good.

Thats a good idea John as the owner of my unit has several old mg's down at the yard so i may ask if i can buy one from him

I got a 10 row one that I had on my mini years ago...not sure it's big enough though.

Could I use both coolers...first the 10 row and then the one in the rad?

Using both coolers is a common way of doing it. Pass the ATF through your add on cooler to take the worst of the heat out, then through the rad to bring the ATF back to proper working temp.

Contrary to what some people think, ATF's operating temperature window can be higher than engine temp (hence all this 'hot transmission tunnel' talk).

i have order this one (cheaper of course) but its 550x150mm so a decent size but i have no air con radiator or air con for that matter so im going to put this one in its place to cool my ATF. if you have the air con radiator can think of too many places it can go?? any thoughts?

Yep, it's well over 200 degrees!

...and to expand, the issue is not that the ATF is hot, but where it dumps its heat in this truck's design.
