Probably a daft qeustion,
but when my gear selector is in neautral, and the auto is in drive the car will not move untill I move the gear selector to H OR L 4.

Is this normal???

The Surf (and any 4x4) in essence has two gearboxes, the normal one, in this case auto, which gives you your forward and reverse gears, and a transfer box which gives you your 4x4 ability, sending drive to the front and rear wheels, this also give you the ability to have high and low range.
Both of these gearboxes have a neurtal position, so to actually move anywhere neither can be in neutral.
