identifying generation

Hi all, new members first question. I have a Jap import Hilux surf ssr-x 2.7 petrol auto 1996, but I do not know what gen(version) it is, or what the diferences between gen's are. I have (hopefully) attached a photo of my truck to help you ID it. Cheers all. Stew

Tail gate lifts up

2nd Gen is the opposite

3rd gen has coil front suspension, centre diff, totally differant chassis and steering set up, as well as other minor details.

The front cupholder is different
But, the lift up tailgate is probably the most obvious way to tell and doesnt involve crawling around underneath or inside.

Nice looking vehicle BTW, and welcome. I get the feeling that the number of 2.7 owners is going to increase.

Thanks everyone for your input. I now know I have a third generation with the lift tailgate. Thanks also to Bogus for your kind comment about the look and the welcome. The photo was taken the day I brought the Hilux in 2008.

back side windows dont curve up over the roof like on 2nd gens. also the 'fold' in the body work is different.
