  • 2.7's

I'm looking to ship in a Surf from Japan, I've got the feelers out for a 3.0 L Diesel 99/00 year and they're pretty thin on the ground out there now.

I had a 3.0 2nd Gen Diesel Surf for 7 years which was super reliable and bomb proof till the other half took out a telegraph pole with it after hitting black ice

I was just wondering about the 2.7 petrols, the performance seems near the diesel, there are plenty out there and seem to be cheaper because of availabilty, but I don't know the engine and I'm worried should it go bang that I'd have trouble sourcing another.

Any 2.7 owners out there that can give me some feedback on performance, reliability, mpg etc or if you're a diesel owner if you would conside the 2.7 when yours finally goes to the scrap heap in the sky

Vince (Bushwacker) has one and seems very pleased with it, at least one other member has to.

I've worked on 2 in the past, they are nice motors, I wouldn't worry about terminal issues unless you plan of keeping it eons or it comes with loads of miles on it.

Service parts are available from Toyota, Vince will know if you can get aftemarket parts, I've only ever gone to Toyota.

Not sure of car application to cross referance parts to, it mostly seems to be a US based motor in Tacomas, 4Runners and T100 pickups. (and the Surf in Japan obviously...)

      Marvelous!
Had It for just over a year now and it's been faultless. Does 33 to the gallon on a run, pulls our 22ft caravan no problem. No temperature issues from the engine or auto 'box.
If I'm honest I prefer driving it to my V8 Surf as it's so smooth and quiet.

The engines are more reliable than the diesels too and can be tweaked to over 200bhp without any fuss.

Type 3RZFE into Google to read about the engines, everything else on the truck is the same as the diesels.

i was just wondering how many of us on the forum that have 3rd gens have got the same style as Vince and I.I prefer the look of them myself compared to the earlier 3rd gens.It must be to do with the chrome and the way the front bumper sticks out more (which i'm still not use to yet) lol
Sorry but mine is the 3.0l TD intercooled

Just been looking on r-traxs & they don't do 2.7 parts, ie exhausts, plugs, leads ect.

How easy is it to get parts?
If its not broke don't fix it.

I drove mine down to Roughtrax a few weeks back to show Barry the truck when I collected the new rear springs and asked about parts availability and he said "no problem"

Bushwhaker, you've got me kinda interested, with parts no problem i've now got to give this serious thought !

What kind of "tweaks" are you talking about, and am I right in thinking that the 2.7's have a timing chain rather than the belt ??

Yeah, it's a timing chain on these engines.

Tweaks include, superchargers, turbos, induction kits etc.

The 3rzfe has the same power output as the V6 and the engine is used in the Landcruiser Prado/Colorado I believe.

Here is a 'slightly' teaked 2.7 (3rzfe) engine.......
