  • Engine Trouble

    Hello Surfers

Has anyone got an engine block for a 93' L reg 3ltr Auto Surf?
As mine is having some trouble and my mechanic thinks the piston rings have gone or are going.

    Thanks, Stuart.

        The symptoms are:
Intermittent blue smoke, one day fine, next smoking - he said injector 4 needs looking at, as when he disconected it the smoke stoped, then started again when put injector 4 back on, it still smoked when other injectors were disconected. When he removed engine oil filler cap with engine running a load of blue smoke shot up like a steam train, he said it was bad compression, piston rings maybe gone, that is why oil is leaking from under engine as the pressure is getting past the piston rings and oil is being forced out through any weak seals.

He seems an ok bloke, has done some work on my surf and had worked on others before.

Can't see how he had the engine running with an injector disconnected, (Unless he plugged the fuel pipe somehow to that injector.) Surfs are not common rail diesels.

Did he check the crankcase breather on the valve cover isn't blocked? if it is there would be pressure build up causing blow-by of the rings leading to burning oil. (blue smoke)

First things first do a compression check.

He hoped it might be a breather pipe when I told him the symptoms, but he said they were all ok.
Can I just go to a garage for a compression check? What does it involve?
Thanks for all the help, Stuart.

Similar to this, except remove the glowplugs instead of sparkplugs.

but don't use a petrol engine tester from Halfords, you'll blow it to bits!
