  • Locking the engine on a Surf 2.4 auto??? can anyone help??

Hi guys!! Hope ur all good!! Was just wondering if anyone knows how to lock the engine so u can remove the crankshaft pulley on a 2.4 Hilux Surf LN130 auto?? I know that one method is to remove the starter and jam a screwdriver into the ring gear 2 jam the engine but I was wondering whether there is an easier way to achieve this?? I am trying to replace my water pump cos it has just started leaking a bit, but removing the starter motor to get to the ring gear seems to be the hardest, most fiddley part of the whole job!! i know there are 2 17mil nuts to be undone etc, but is there not another way of locking the engine without fiddling with the starter?? Also, if all else fails is anyone willing to give me a hand with replacing the water pump & I'll give them a good drink for their time?! Sure there must be a few kind Surf Fanatics out there in the Colchester/ Essex area who are good with the old spanners!! Thanks again guys!!

when i did mine i loaned a tool from a mechanic mate, this tool was like a 4 foot long filter removal tool but it gripped the bottom pully so you could undo the nut, then get a puller on the pully and away you go.
Surf.gone but not forgottendisco now gone aswell

I always use a socket and bar, then hit the bar with a good size piece of wood (bit of 4x2 or something) and it normally comes undone.
If at first you don't succeed.........give up.

I used the alternator tensioner, wedged it against the O/S chassis rail.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

As I always say 'I aint no mechanic' but, just after I got my Surf the crank pully needed to be changed due to some damage to the rubber harmoniser. Well apart from costing an arm and a leg I was told that the damage was due to someone removing it in the incorrect manner. Sooooo, be carefull and good luck. Oh yeah, happened a week before Christmas. Just what I needed at that time of year

This is a really useful bit of advice m8... Do u mean to use a prybar on the notches on the Crank Pulley/ harmoniser??? Cos this is only a plastic material & I'm a bit worried about cracking it if I put too much force on it???? But this sounds a much better idea than having to mess around with the starter motor etc!! Thanks again!!

Yep done the pump when I put a new head on mine. Usually free sat afternoons from 4pm on.

You still after that white 8 spoke wheel ?

                          Cheers,
                          Rob.

Can do a Monday evening. Finish at 5 in Brentwood.

                              Rob.

Used the 'rest breaker bar on nearside chassis rail, flick starter switch' method to undo it, bolted my puller to 2 of the holes and rested on a jack to do up. Made a special tool for the 3.0 as it's a lot tighter than the 2.4....
